Help red and white material smearing, how do I make it stop ? Ok I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem ? The red and white striped material that I am using for the other challenge is smearing when I iron it and bleeding into the white. I though it may be due to the steam. So I switched it to cotton/ no steam and still, same thing. It's Very frustrating and it's making me Angry !! I've put in too much work into my dresses for them to be ruined....Ugh !! HELP, is there any way that I can set the color to stop it from smearing? |
Did you prewash the fabric? If not, I wonder if one of those color catcher sheets would pull the excess ink out so it wouldn't bleed in the wash or during ironing. I've never had this happen. I'm sorry I'm not much help. Good luck! ;) |

Do you prewash your fabrics ? |
I prewash everything that will be washed when completed. If it's going into the washer to be cleaned then it needs to be washed before cutting out. I was also thinking of a color catcher sheet. They are fantastic!! |
Im not sure that they can go into the washer. All the ones that I've gotten for Ruby Bella say to hand wash and line dry. Where would I get the color catchers sheets ? |

So, should I prewash all of my fabric ? Who does and who doesn't ? |
If the fabric can be hand washed, then follow the instructions for the fabric. Then give the fabric a vinegar rinse using one to two tablespoons white vinegar per cup of water. The vinegar helps to set the dye. It isn't perfect or foolproof, but it helps. Also, you might try lowering the temp setting on your iron and use a pressing cloth. |

I cant prewash or do the vinegar wash now or it may be ruined. After the first few times I used a piece of sew in liner to put over the top. Came off on that too. |

I bet your little outfits are cute. If the color bleeds, you might not be able to do anything at this point but chalk it up as a learning experience. I know how frustrating it can be. I don't like using the glittery cotton fabric. I always forget to turn the iron down and scorch the fabric. |
I prewashing anything that's going to be worn, so that it shrinks and also to get the sizing out of the fabrics. Color catchers are made by shout also and can be found in the laundry detergent aisle. |
I usually prewash all my fabric. I do have to admit that on a few of Chloe's things I didn't. I will remember to do that and the vinegar rinse from now on. Dawn, I hope you can get it to stop. I know you are frustrated. |
You should wash all fabric before you cut any thing out because of shrinkage. Also try salt in the rinse cycle, if you have done any tye dyeing they recomend that to keep the color;s from running. Other wise when you wash the tye dyed clothing they will bleed. Just a suggestion. This work;s on jean;s too help;s hold the color longer. Hope this help's. Have a great day. Anne/Luci:p |
I agree with everyone above. Always pre wash any fabric that is washable. And then iron. I do the vinegar rinse also. I know it so a pain but fabrics shrink different. Good luck I hope everything turns out well |
OK so Now Im just Mad :( . . .PREWASH Everything, Good 2 Know . . . . I assume on gentle wash, correct ? Do I need to run a base stitch along the edges before washing ? |

but I don't wash anything first since I have never washed any of Lola's clothes. |
Yes I would run a stitch around the edges if you think it may fray. Also wash things separate. |
  OMG went downstairs to put some of my material in the wash and found both sinks backed up and full of water. Thank goodness there were two sinks or I would of had one hell of a mess on m hands. I just spent the last hour trying to unplug the sinks and the drain with no luck. Can you imagine what might happen to the org cast iron pipes from a home build in 1962. I was fed up and was going to call a plumber when I gave it one last try and than the whole freaking pipe busted off and fell to the ground. Holy crap what Now, water is going everywhere but into the stupid floor drain. Well thank goodness I was quick thinking and grabbed a shallow pan, an old unused litter box of all things. Once it filled up I emptied it in the floor drain again and again until the water was done. And than did it again because there was still water sitting in the washer. Ugh !! Never a dull moment. So sewing is on hold while I'm off to Menards to find something for a quick fix until we can find a plumber to do the work. |
I have head retayne is good. |

We replace so much of the plumbing in older houses with cast iron, its pathetic! If we were closer, I would offer our plumbing services. |
