New help form sewing Diva's / Collars ? I really like the look of a collar on my doggy clothes. So it took me a while to finally figure out the correct size and shape but I ran into a problem figuring out how to attack it to my dress. Im sure I learned this somewhere all those years ago but for the life of me I can not remember how to do it. This is what I did: 1. I attacked the collar to the dress first. 2. I do the sew and flip leaving the neck open to flip. 3. I turn and pin, sewed the neck closed under the collar. It looked ok for the most part, I can live with it. But it got all jumbled and had some loose material. What did I do wrong, is there a better way and if so please do tell ! |
without seeing a pictures I am going to try to help-- or maybe just confuse you more lol I open the collar and attach the collar..one side--right sides together to the dress. I then turn the collar correctly and attached the turned under edge by sewing by hand. You could attached that edge by top stitching OR attached collar by surger...there will be a narrow surger seam on the inside of the garment. Remember the side you sew on will have the most "ease" of course if the dress is lined there could be other ways. |
I sew the bodice and flip. so with the two right sides facing each other, I take a finshed collar (except it's not finished at the neck line) and attach and pin it to the good side of the bodice at the neck line, But often you have to sew a seam along it to keep it down. |
Need pictures, but this is how I "do collars" whether on doggie duds or on people clothes... 1) Sew the collar and lining together, leaving the entire bottom open 2) Turn collar - use a collar turner to be sure that it is turned all the way out and steam press to flatten - open bottoms of the collar and lining should match 3) To make it easier to attach, machine baste the bottom of the collar - the side that you will be sewing to the garment 4) Mark center of the collar and center back of the garment 5) Pin the collar to the dress right sides together - matching center backs, and starting at center back and baste 6) Pin the lining to the dress/collar unit - right sides together and sew as you normally would, leaving the same space for turning 7) Turn the collar right side out and make sure the collar is even and there aren't any puckers. 8) Turn the garment back to wrong sides out and carefully trim neck seam 9) Turn right side out and press 10) Admire your lovely dress/harness/etc. with a perfectly and centered balanced collar |
Ok, thanks ladies. Its seems like such a simple thing to do but of course I have to complicate things. I've been trying different way of sewing the dresses I can do the (open collar than flip) or the (open bottom and flip). I guess it would depend on whether I put a collar on the dress or not. If not I prefer the open neck, if I do put on a color on the sewn neck and the open bottom would be best. Now, did I confuse any of you ? Would love to see your collared dresses! I've only done collars a few times. I need more practice with them too. ;) |

Two of the designs for the challenges will have collars. I tried doing one for the last challenge but it was a bust. Thought I would give it another go and see what I come up with. Myself I think that it adds a splash of color to the dress. |
