Anyone else ever have issues with a pattern? Hey all! I have been working on creating some clothes, hoodies in particular and I am using a simplicity pattern. The problem is that no matter how precise I am with sem allowances and no matter how carefully I follow the pattern it just doesnt fit together. The hood of the hoodie never fits into the neck opening and the sleeves are too large for the arm opening. The only time the pattern works is in the XS size. Has anyone else ever encountered this problem with a pattern? I have been sewing for almost 30 years and this is a first for me. |
Which pattern are you using? Is it possible there is extra ease in the larger sizes? I've discovered that Simplicity patterns are sometimes anything but. |
Try this to ease in your sleeves etc: use a long stitch near the edge of the sleeve. Then, gently pull the bottom stitch until your sleeve size matches up with the length of where you're attaching it. Pin, starting from the middle & working back to each edge, then sew. This is called "easing in" your sleeves. :) Hope that helps! |
Honestly, every Simplicity pattern I have ever used has given me fits. There always seems to be one part of the pattern that doesn't get explained in a way that I can understand it and I end up having to figure it our myself by trial and error. I'm sure it's me because other people don't seem to have this problem. McCall's patterns however, I never seem to have any problems with. Now I am not professionally trained. I taught myself how to sew when my mom decided that since my fingers were smaller than hers, I could learn to make my own Barbie doll dresses. LOL It wasn't until I bought a new sewing machine that I began taking lessons and have learned so very much. Since then, I'm not afraid to try most anything. End of story...I guess I'm just a McCall's girl! LOL |

I haven't started sewing but I already know I will have issues with patterns just as I do with my knitting :D Sorry I'm no help lol. |
I haven't sewn in over 25 yrs, I always used Simplicity patterns. That being said they do seem as though they have gotten more difficult over the years...thought it was just me. |
Thanks for the replies, nice to see I am not alone. Its so frustrating to have a pattern that doesnt work. I had tried to create ease in the sleeves as is often part of a pattern even tho it wasnt a step in this one and even then it just didnt fit (which is ridiculous lol) The craziest thing about this whole mess is that the pattern worked great with the smallest size but not with the larger one. So my solution was to order a Miss Daisy pattern. Her patterns are flawless and I am happy to say that I am putting the final touches on the hoodies that I have succesdfully made :) |
My mind must be wired differently than most. LOL. I have more problems with McCalls than Simplicity patterns. Good luck to you! I hope you get the pattern figured out! :) |
