My First Attempt at Knitting a Yorkie Sweater! Lol! 3 Attachment(s) This is messed up and I was going to quit but I decided to (almost) finish it mainly for practice. Just for fun, I'll let you all have a go at finding all my mistakes! Two good things though... It does fit Sapphire and keeps her warm... I didn't have a pattern at the time (I have several now, lol) and I haven't knitted anything for over 30 years! (and wasn't good at it then either, Ha). Also, this was mostly done in the Continental method which I love, but am just learning to do. I originally learned to knit with the English method. Just thought I'd post this for anyone wishing to learn a craft... don't be afraid to try something new. I bought two kits at WalMart... How to Knit and How to Crochet, they come with knitting needles and a crochet hook, respectively, and a booklet with instructions (even for lefties!), I bought some yarn, then watched a few You Tube videos and had a go at it! good job! |
I think it's pretty great - especially since you didn't have a pattern! I would show you the sweater I knit for my pup..... But I didn't and couldn't! Haha! :D |
I don't know how it looks on, but it looks like a great job to me:thumbup::D |
You should be proud of yourself. great job ! |
Wow, that is great I would love to learn to knit, I just learned to crochet last year, I can sew but knit is still a no go for me... LOL congratulations.. hugs, |
Your sweater looks great! I need to teach myself how to do that too! I'm adding up how much money I'll save in my head right now... |
2 Attachment(s) Oh my! You all are way too kind! Okay, minus the dropped stitches and all the ends I still need to weave in, lol: Attachment 379274 Attachment 379275 I think I'll try using a pattern next time, lol! But Thanks for all the compliments! Sapphire hates to have her picture taken so I'll try to get one of Peek A Boo with her sweater on him! |
for the first time its a great job!! |
show off! Great job! |
Did you really teach yourself? |

Great work! Such neat stitches! I wing it when I knit. I've never figured out how to follow a pattern. The only way I'm able to knit something for ZoE is because she's right there with me & I keep holding it up against her. And I don't think I've ever knitted any two things exactly the same way. I keep saying I really need to write down what I do....but then never do. :p You have me curious with the English & Continental comment. Is it the way you hold your needles & wrap or pull yarn? My Grandma is German, and she taught me to knit as a young child, but my Mum also taught me too. I never realized it wasn't the same way, until my Mum will look at one of my latest projects for ZoE and she'll say things like, "oh, there you did a few rows like your Grandma"...she says she can tell my the slant of the stitch. Probaby explains why sometimes my creations don't look as neat as they should. |
Thank you! The English method: Hold the yarn in the right hand and wrap the needle to make a stitch. The Continental method: Hold the yarn in the left hand and manuver it as close as possible to the back of your work. When you stick the needle into the stitch, you scoop the yarn and pull it through. |
Yes! Those are exactly the two ways I do it. My Grandma does continental. Her stitches are so incredibly neat & even in tension. Now I'm curious if it's just because she's such as good knitter with years of practice or if the style of knitting itself produces a neater product. |

I also watch this lady on TV everyday! Just the few seconds in the beginning she knits fast! |
I'm so proud of you! Teaching yourself how to knit. My sister & I tried it once and we were terrible - she not as much as I. I really wish I could try again. But your work is really good! I would be so proud of doing that myself I would bust my buttons. I have always wanted to knit. You are making me want to try again as I love the sweater. And I'll bet it feels good to a cold little Yorkie!!! Looks like something right off Fair Isle. |

That is simply amazing that you taught yourself. I don't even know how to sew. Well, I can tack something in a pinch but it ain't pretty. What a great job on your first attempt!! I cannot wait to see what you do in the future...gonna be getting a lot of requests for sweaters - careful ;) :) |

Awesome job! I have been taught to knit and crochet - both the most simple, basic way possible. That said, I did recently watch a bunch of you tube videos on crocheting (I'll get back to knitting at some point in the future). I have to say, you tube is great but you did a phenomenal job on the sweater! Can't wait to see your pup wearing it! |

I've seen so many beautiful sweaters, vests, cardigans, leg warmers, gloves and such both knitted and crocheted. On TV a lady even crocheted/knitted rugs! She used huge needles, hooks and hugh yarn, lol! Almost as big around as my wrist! Made cute little area rugs though! I adapted a crocheted doll dress/ air freshener pattern to fit my Yorkie for last years Valentines Day Ball (I forgot I made that, lol). I was helping my neighbor make air-freshner covers for a Fire Hall event, good practice for me. Then I got the idea that they would fit my dog, if I made the bodice bigger, lol! We must have similar taste, as I like to add a few ruffles to ZoE's sweaters so they look more like a dress. She's long in the body, so it fills in the space a bit :) Here's her in the red ruffled sweater I made last year. |

2 Attachment(s) Miss Sapphire agreed somewhat to having her pic taken. I inadvertantly hit a button or something that has changed the timing on my camera, so pics are blurry! But here goes: Attachment 379347 Attachment 379348 She loves wearing it. When I hold it up to put it on her, she sticks her head through the neck hole all by herself! |
I'm attempting my first crocheted yorkie sweater for Sadie I just started it tonight. I'll try knitting next looks fun. Great job you should be very very proud of yourself |

Oh, I finally just gave that huge old afghan to the Goodwill as it took up so much space in my linen closet and was never used. I didn't know how to cut it down and not start it unraveling all around every side I cut nor, truthfully, would I spend that much time worrying with it. It did serve a wonderful purpose though and kept me busy while Kathi's last weeks of her difficult pregnancy and the birth passed with a beautiful little girl. |
Great job! Cute! :) |
