Sewing Machine? I am really interested in learning to sew and want to start with dog clothes. I have absolutely no sewing experience. Is there a machine you guys would suggest that isn't too expensive? Thanks :D |
I love Brother and Babylock machines. You can get an inexpensive Brother at Walmart. |
I agree. I think Brother is user friendly with the drop in bobbin but I think a lot of the sewing machines nowadays are easier to use! |
They are correct, Brother is easy to use. You might look at Janome, they are good machines and often very reasonable. |
I have a viking.. some of the "simpler" model are really great. I also have an Elna, it was a "school" model so made to hold up under misuse. Brother also has starter models that are great. Good luck. |
I would rather a reconditioned machine that cost more when new and better quality. My daughter has a few new machines at girl scout camp( she works there in the summer) that are so cheaply made they are more frustrating to use than the older models. We have a local guy that sets up at one of the smaller fleamarkets that fixes and sells older machines at such reasonable prices! |

Check your local Craigslist for places going out of business that need to sell their machines. |
I own two singers and a brother. I have never had any problem with any of them that wasn't my fault. I learned to sew on a very simple singer years ago. I just got a brother embroidery machine this summer and I have had lots of fun learning to use it. Good Luck!! You will enjoy sewing....it is my stress reliever. :) Plus, you can still sew with a pup on your lap...I do ALL the time. :D |
I started on a Brother and am still using it. I love it! It's a basic one that my Mom got me at Wal Mart as a Christmas present a few years ago. It is very user friendly and I think she got it on special on Black Friday for like $99. Good luck with your sewing! Be sure to share with us what you create! :) |
Thanks so much for the advice! Do you guys think this would make for a good first sewing machine? Brother 14-Stitch Sewing Machine - Walmart.com I'm also going to go on Craigslist, hadn't thought of that. I could probably find a better one at a discounted price on there. |

Craigslist is a great idea too! I see machines on their for my local area all the time. |
Great machine, great price I wanted a new machine but didn't have a lot of money to spend. I went on Amazon.com and bought: SINGER Factory Serviced 7256 Fashion Mate Computerized Sewing Machine It is reconditioned but has the same guarantee as new. Amazon is EXCELLENT for returns if you have a problem. Buying new was $149 but I got the factory serviced one for $119. If you Google it, you will find this machine VERY highly rated. So far, I think it is a great machine!! Louise :aimeeyork:animal-pa:animal-pa:animal-pa:animal-pa:aimeeyork |
I would get this one.... it has more features once you learn and would give you more options as you gain experience. I think with the one you picked out, in a week or two you'd be wanting a little bit better machine.... Brother XL2600i 25-Stitch Free-Arm Sewing Machine -Walmart.com |
