Sewing Machine Help! 1 Attachment(s) This is not really fashion related, but it is sewing related and I figured I would get the most replies here. Sorry this is long. Many of you know that I create custom toy baskets. Well, I've hit a brick in the road in that the baskets I am currently using have been discontinued. They were strong baskets that came with a liner. If I am going to continue to make baskets, I will have to learn to make my own liners. In a sense, it would open up a whole new world of possibilities but that's for later.....:) Here's my problem. I have a little Brother sewing machine. Its pretty new but the last time I used it I broke a needle. (I'm telling you...I am sewing impaired) I consulted the owners manual and replaced the needle. However ever since, I cannot get the tention right (I think it's the tention). Every few stitches, it kind of skips a stitch (every few stitches there will be one longer than the others and it doesn't go through the fabric creating a weak spot in the seam) and even when I set the lentgh of the stitch to different lengths, it doesn't change the actual stitch length. Any ideas what I am doing wrong? I am not a seamstress by the farthest stretch, but do think I could do something as simple as a basket liner if my machine worked properly. Below is a picture of my machine. |
Wish I could help you Shelly. But I am sewing machine impaired!! I just started using one and lets just say it wasn't pretty!! :p:p However, have you tried using Google? When I was having problems getting mine set up (yes I had problems) I googled the machine I have and found a You Tube to guide me. Just a thought!! |
did you get the piece of the needle that broke off? if not it can be stuck in the bottom, I had that happen to me once with mine, and hubby figure it out, the tip of the needle was stuck under the little teeth that move the fabric. hugs, |
so when you put the new needle in your sure it is right to the top and you resecured it properly...? do you have any directions in the manual to be sure you didnt miss a step? |

Well, I did consult the manual, but that's not saying I did it right. I will have to go back and check again. To be honest, this is what I keep thinking is the problem. But I'm having the same results. When I first got this machine, I was having a lot of fun with it. It was smooth sewing and easy to operate. I would like to enjoy sewing, but it's the equipement that I get frustrated with, not the actual sewing. |
From your machine's user manual: http://www.brother-usa.com/ModelDocu...000_EN_185.PDF clean the plate and the bobbin case. You have not threaded the upper thread properly. Correct the upper threading. page 16 You have not used the right combination of fabric, thread and needle. Choose a thread and needle that are appropriate for the type of fabric. page 20 The needle is bent or blunt. Replace the needle. You have not inserted the needle page 21 properly. Insert the needle properly. Dust has accumulated under the needle plate or in the bobbin case. Remove the needle plate cover and |

Anytime my bobbin messes us up and the stitching underneath is very loose and looped, it's because I didn't thread the machine correctly. When I go back and re-thread it, it works great! |
hope you have the problem licked and your back to sewing!! |
Shelly- my vote is incorrect threading. It may sound crazy but try inserting the thread into the needle from the opposite direction. The bobbin also has a correct direction it should come off the spool & I've been known to insert them backwards as well  You may still have a slight problem if you adjusted the tension knob trying to figure out was wrong so be sure to readjust that too. Welcome to the crazy world of sewing! |
Thank you all for the feedback. I am sure one of these suggestions is my problem. |
When I bought my Bernina, and attended the day long class, the first thing I was taught, if you have any problems, rethread and sure enough 95% of the time that is the problem. However I also agree that a broken piece of the needle might be stuck in the feed dogs. |
