Fabric Storage? Sewing Rooms? Anybody seen any good ideas lately? I'm making a small area in my scrapbooking room for my new obsession with sewing. I found a small desk, chair on Craigslist today for $25 and my hubby picked it up for me. I am going to paint it and re-cover the seat of the chair with some cute fabric. But I was wondering about storage ideas. Any ideas? Pix would be great too. ;) |
What I would do since you are starting out, is buy some large plastic storage containers in a color that matches your decor, and use those to store fabric. You can also throw things to keep out of sight (and out of KS reach) in there when you finish...spools of thread, swatches, rulers...patterns. You'll be surprised at how many things this sewing addiction creates. |
I have been sewing for quite a while. I have tried storage containers, under the bed boxes, cardboard boxes marked with a list of what is in it. My current form of storing fabric is a bookcase. I put all of my plain pastels in a stack, darker plain fabric in a stack, holiday fabrics in a stack, tiny print (doggie dresses) in a stack, and large print in a stack. When I cut things out I put EVERYTHING for a project in a gal ziplock (it can be used over again),I can add any special idea notes to the bag as well. This way I can lay everything out and cut out for an entire day and then sew when life allows. You can even stack the project bags on a shelf. I can always see quickly what I have so I dont purchase what I dont need. I also keep my patterns (about 40yrs worth) in a file cabinet (craft, doggie, childrens, mens). |

Thanks for all of the great tips guys! Wonderful ideas!!! I really really like that mini bolt of fabric storage idea! I am thinking I can do that and put the mini bolts in the drawers of my new desk, plastic storage bins, or cabinet. I'm off to look at more ideas now that I have some down time. Katie Scarlett is asleep on my feet and the hubby just went to bed. He has to go out to work tonight. :) Tomorrow I am sewing!!! Yay! |
That is what my fabric looks like, only the stacks are horizontal. I broke down and purchased some SCREAMING brite pink today for a cupcake dress for Mina. |
4 Attachment(s) I've been browsing online and found a few neat storage ideas. I thought I might as well share them with you guys too. I hope it is ok to post these photos. I just found them on google search images. There are some neat ideas. |

Love the hangers for the fabric and the ribbon. I have a plastic storage dresser that has ribbon in one drawer, specialty buttons in one and lace in the last two drawers. I can pull one of the drawers out and put it on my cutting table to lay out with fabric when brainstorming as to what notions I want to use. |
If you are tight for space (and you will be once you become a fabric addict) those storage bags that you pull the air out of with your vacuum work real well under the bed. |

As for ideas, I can kill a whole day doing nothing but drooling over images on Pinterest. Just type in sewing rooms or craft storage- but don't say I didn't warn you!:D |

I have yet to get sucked into Pinterest. Im afraid to look! I have a hard enough time putting the laptop down because of YT and FB,nevermind that LIFE just gets in the way of being creative. I may have to break down and take a look, but it will have to wait until after school ends. |

Bored? what is bored? Ive thought about putting it on my phone. There is a "no phones at the table" rule around here 6kids,3 still living here,I might get in trouble and they would enjoy the moment waaaay to much. But roadtrips would be great. I usually take some kind of handsewing in the car (xstitch, embroidery, smocking). Busy hands are happy hands. Arent there other craft ideas on Pinterest and cooking ideas? |

And Pinterest is great for other craft ideas and cooking ideas. You can find almost any sort of inspiration for any thing on Pinterest. My Mom teaches 5th grade and is on there a lot in the evenings when she is enjoying her down time. For example, her students recently had their yearly testing. She used Pinterest for ideas for treats for them every day of the testing. Like each day, she gave them a healthy treat before testing to get them going. Like she did a healthy granola trail mix on the day they did the reading assesment. She put a little note on the trail mix baggies with a little pun about 'using the trail to find clues' or something like that when it came to the reading part. It was a really neat idea. Ooh, and something else I LOVE to do...look up party and cake ideas on there. I find cakes on there and use them as inspiration in my scrapbooking all the time. Love me some Pinterest. ;) |
great ideas you found, love the rolls of ribbon on the paper towel holder and the fabric on the pants hangers, and the cookie jars filled of notions, Done right the sewing stuff becomes part of the decor, can't wait to see what you wind up deciding on. |
