Well I've gone and done it.... Tee hee! Hey guys! Well I have gotten myself into a heap of trouble I'm sure. I was in Hobby Lobby the other day and I lurked into the sewing section. Before I knew it, I picked out fabric, ribbon, a pack of d-rings, velcro, and a pattern! Mind you, I have NEVER sewn anything besides paper in my scrapbooking room and hemmed a few things. But I decided to just dive in and go for it. I got this pattern: Pet Clothes | Pet Clothes | Crafts/Dolls/Pets | McCall's Patterns I am going to attempt (keyword here is attempt...LOL) to make Katie Scarlett a dress like the pink one pictured on the pattern packet. I found some adorable damask looking fabric. It has a gray base with shades of cream, green, and pink on top. I just know it's going to turn out all wonky, but I am determined to learn how to make her a few dresses on my own. I still will order from other YT vendors and online, but I want to know that proud feeling too of making something myself. :) I called a local sewing shop today and signed up for a beginners sewing class for this coming Tuesday night. It's just a one time session that lasts 3 hours but they go over the basics and teach you how to work with patterns. I thought that might help before starting my own. So I hope by next week I'll be stitching away. I will for sure show my finished project but you guys can't laugh! Anyways, I was just so excited I had to share! I really do hope I can learn to make cute things like some of you ladies do! :) |
You seem to talented with those other things you do, I'll bet you excel at this - baby steps at first and then you'll get the hang of it and then real success. Can't wait to see it finished on your Katie Scarlett. |
Aymee! I am sure it will look beautiful! You are such a talented person and no doubt will conquer this :) You must post pics when its complete....I cant wait to see it!! :D |
1 Attachment(s) That's the pattern I use (mostly)! I have tweaked it more to my liking (or laziness, lol) See Infinity's Valentine's Day Ball photo in the main entry thread....:D Better yet I'll post it here: Attachment 362640 |
You will be a talented little seamstress before you know it! Great idea on the beginner's class, that what I need...classes;) Good luck, can't wait to see your dresses. |
Good luck! I love that pattern. I can't wait to see pix of Katie Scarlett in her new dress! My mom can sew anything and I can't even sew on a button, lol. She's got some dog clothes patterns that she's going to teach me how to sew. One is a simple harness. I can't wait! I hope I can learn how to make those cute clothes to! |
2 Attachment(s) I made the skirt longer due to the lace and lace insert, and it's only pinned on her bc I was late for the VDB entry, Lol! When I add the velcro the bodice will fit better. She's an XL in girth, but only 12 inches long, so I shortened the bodice by 2 inches so I could make the skirt longer. I like the shorter skirt on the pattern though, bc I love being able to add lace, lol! (without having to make other adjustments), I made the boy's vest for Peek a Boo: Attachment 362646 Attachment 362647 |

No doubt KS will be one of the best dressed gals on YT :) |
I have that pattern but haven't tried making anything yet. I'm also a beginner. I took one basic sewing class last year and just started my second session. I'm known as the "dog lady" because I'm the only one not making people clothes. Lol. Please post pictures when you're done. |
1 Attachment(s) Thanks for your support guys! :) I sure hope I can do it! Kathy...Wow! You did a fabulous job! And I love how you altered it to fit your needs! Way to go! I found another pattern that I ordered. LOL. It is a out of print pattern but it was too cute. I first saw it on Amazon, but found it cheaper on Etsy. I think I will try this one after I get the first one down. |
Good for you! I wish I had the time and ambition, cant wait to see what you come up with:) |
Oh, I've been wanting a carrier pattern. Can I ask where you ordered it? You can pm me if you want. Thank you!!!! Quote:

I practice any new techniques on an old piece of bedsheet first. Finny's dress is made from a not so old pair of PJ's, lol. I cut the legs off the PJs and will hem them to make shorts (for me), lol. I buy clothing that catches my eye at the thrift store, to use for making dog clothes, and hit the sales in the baby dept at WalMart and Target for infant clothing that can be easily altered to fit. I bought a little girls dress at Kohl's, and it came with a small dress for a babydoll... lol, yes it fits Sapphire! And I have enough material to make 2 more matching dresses for my other 2 girls. I bought a ton of patterns on Ebay... (yes, I got that one too, lol, but I haven't tried it yet!). I haven't sewn for years, I'm just getting back into it (for my doggies, of course!). I also bought and refurbished an old treadle sewing machine, an 1896 Singer model... and I'm trying to learn how to sew on it, lol! Attachment 362710 This pic inspired Peek a Boo's TDF outfit. Attachment 362712 This is a 3-6 months infant cheerleaders outfit I got for $5 at WalMart and altered it. Attachment 362711 This is the 'before/during' pic of the sewing machine head and the cabinet drawers. Attachment 362713 This is the 'before' pic of the 1896 machine cabinet. Be careful, sewing is very addictive! You shouldn't have any problem at all, seriously. If you do, just holler... lol! Good luck with your class.:D |
I love Hobby Lobby but I never venture into that department! |
I ordered the pattern on Etsy. It was the only one she had. I paid $17 (plus $2 shipping) for it, which is a little higher, but it is a discontinued pattern. Here it is on Amazon: Kathy...what a beautiful sewing machine! My Mom has one sort of like that. It belonged to her great grandmother. She did use it when I was smaller but I am not sure if it is still in working order or not. I need to ask her. I would love to have it in my own home one day. |

With my new antique machine, it gives me a sense of control, knowing I can sew when the power goes out, by candlelight, lol! The only drawback is that it doesn't have 'reverse'. It doesn't zigzag either, but I bought an attachment that does. The most it needed was a good cleaning and some fresh oil.... now it's running great! |
I cant use a pattern to save my life..... I can look at an already made dress or harness and make one from it, but the patterns confuse me. I have that same pattern and I hate it! (the first one you posted) If Katie scarlett is like Allie, you'll have to adjust it. The sizing on it's a little odd. |
