We Have 5 Puppies!!!! Hi Everyone!!! I just got back from the vets with "Missy". We confirmed 5 puppies in her tummy...!!!!!  She is due exactly 3 weeks from today. Have any of you ever had a litter that big??? The vet said she might get tired and have to be given Karo Syrup or Chicken Broth to keep her energy going. Any more advice on such a big litter? Thanks :p |
I'm sure the breeders will have lots of great advice for you. I just wanted to say congratulations!!! I'm sure you are excited! :) |
i have had three litters of five from 4 1/2 lbs and 5 lb girls. the only thing i did was start feeding them wet puppy food after they were bred about three weeks but i do that no matter how many they have. i always have my breeding dogs on dry puppy kibble all the time. Then after the babies are born, I start putting about a tablespoon of cottage cheese in the morning meal of wet food. Then I make a 'whelping pudding' and put that in the last meal of wet food for the day. helps supplement the mama pluss helps her milk supply. At that time, I am leaving dry down all the time and feeding my mama's four or five wet meals a day. PLUS, my vet gives me calcuim supplements to give them until puppies are weaned. Almost forgot to say congratulations. |

Congrats on your litter. My Biewer Judy had a litter of 5 in July--I tried to save her coat and had to shave her totally down when the pups were 2 weeks old. She was too hot from the pups and the heating pad in the whelping pen. We have a litter of 5 due on Halloween from my Biewer Abbi. It will be fun to compare notes and pictures. Good advice on the nutritional suggestions. |
Congrats and good luck! Our Lexie had a littler of 7 on 07-17-07. They are 11 weeks old and are going to their forever homes. We have 2 males left. Just realize that big litters just mean more work. I was home for the summer when they were born so I was very lucky. Lexie free whelped all 7 with no trouble, we were very lucky. She cared for them all herself, but at 3 1/2 weeks I started to help her because she always looked so tired, even with all the extra food I was giving her. All the puppies are wonderful and were from 2.25 to 3 pounds when they had their shots at 9 weeks. Oh, this was Lexie's 3rd litter, she had 6 with the other 2!! If you need any help or have any questions about large litters, please feel free to PM me. Again, good luck. You will be in my thoughts and prayers!!! |
Congrat on the puppies. I had a litter of 5 last Sunday unfortuniatly 2 didn't make it. I have 2 girls and 1 boy. I forgot how noisy they are LOL. Get some rest while you can.:) |
