Age to Adopt Puppies What is the minimum age that a yorkie puppy should be before it is separated from it's mom and siblings? |
Mine go to their new homes at 12 - 14 weeks for pet puppies . |
I think most books and info says 12 weeks - more time with the mother and siblings... The breeder I got Kona from gaver her to me at 7 weeks...that was before I had really read up on any of this. |

Thanks for any help. |
I have a gal that I got out of a kennel in KY three monthes ago. She was separated too early from her mom when she was a pup and pretty much kept alone for breeding until she was 18 monthes old. She's such a sweetie and desperately wants to be excepted by the rest of my pack but her mother never taught her the proper way to invite play or how to show that you know your place in the pack. If you watch a mother with her pups after they have been weaned you will see her instructing them and helping them to develop their personalities and skills properly. I hope you win in your bid to get the breeder to hold onto them a bit longer. It's hard work keeping these pups until they are 12 weeks old, I know I have 7 of them to pick up after, but it's worth it. They will turn out to be better balanced, happier pups as adults. |
most of mine go at twelve weeks. I have kept a couple until 14 weeks. i let one go at ten weeks but the buyer was an experienced yorkie mama with other dogs and it was the only date she could come get the puppy. the puppy was ready anyhow at that time. I just like to hold on to them until at least twelve weeks. |
10 to 12 weeks old is good. |
Depending on the puppy 10 -12 weeks is the average I recommend. Some may need to stay with mom even longer. |
10-12 weeks is best |
10 to 12 weeks is best. I found with my first that he did not have any social skills at all I got him at 8 weeks. With Winston who I got at 12 weeks has the best. He knew how to go to the wee-pad and was very good with people I have always believed he learned all that from being with his Mom much longer. I also found that housebreaking him was the easiest thing I had ever done. My first dog was a nightmare to housebreak. |
