Rejection after C Section!?!?!? All, my girl had babies this am via C section and now she doesnt want anything to do with the puppies!!! I put them on to nurse while she was still groggy but now she is not wanting to lay with them UUGH! I stimulated them to pee pee and had some back up milk with colostrum just in case...good thing! They suckled pretty good from a little bottle but if anyone has any suggestions or similar history I would like to hear from you. Maybe after her milk comes down she will be more motherly??? |
I've heard that since they don't have any memory of delivering them that the mothers can sometimes be very resistant to the babies. I'm sure an experienced breeder will have more info for you. |
You might want to try posting this in the breeder section. But weekends on here can be slow, so if you don't get an answer right away, don't get discouraged. |
my dog had a cs too and was groggy for a while so it will probably take a few hours before she knows what shes doing, just stay with her and keep trying to get the pups to latch on,you reassuring her at this time is so important, she will be at ease if you are there |
sorry forgot to say that one of the most important things is that the pups are kept warm,I wasnt sure if Pippins pup was latching on well but I left her beside the fire all night as she was cold aswell and I really think this helped her come round |
It's normal for moms to reject pups if they've had a c-sections. Some breeders will keep a placenta for mom to eat once she's up and about (if she's still not tending to the pups). You will have to supplement pups every 3 hours until mom takes over her duties. |
feeding newborns Thanks you guys for the replies, going to post something on the breeder section. I have fed them a few times but they are sooo tiny...I have a heating pad under their box and they seem warm enough but Mom is still vomiting (not much just a little each time)but she seems very nauseous. The little boy was hard to get to eat but I finally got some supplement in him and his belly feels better. Wish I had kept a placenta but doubt she would have eaten it as sick as she seems. She did drink water but wouldnt touch the chicken broth. Oh boy, long nights ahead! |
