How can I tell if the babies are getting enough? My yorkie just had her first litter yesterday. She had 4. Two of them are very small or should I say the other 2 ave very big? Anyways, I want to make sure they are all getting enough to eat. Is there anything I need to do to be certain of this? This morning when I got up they were all wiggling around and climbing over top of each other and doing tinly little whine noises and seemed great but I am so afraid of losing one just because of all the stories I read here. Should I try and feed the babies myself to ensure they are eating? Any positive suggistions please? |
new babies The babies should look full; fat bellies not gaunt or empty to the touch. Have you observed nursing from all four? Make sure each pup is latching on...if so, and bellies look/feel full they are getting enough milk. Do you have scales? You can weigh each morning and night to verify the gain or loss...of course you would need a scale that weighs in grams to see the daily change. Signs of distress: crying, cold, Mom rejecting, weight loss. Good luck! |
They all have fat bellies its just hard to see who is nursing or latched on beacause of her being small and so much hair! If I move hair around or try and look she will stand up or something and then I figure whoever was nursing just got off. They do cry but its just for a moment or two, usually when she is moving and I am guessing they cant feel her so they are crying for her. But as soon as she lays back down, they crawl bak up to her and it stops. I went ahead and bought some puppy formula and a little dropper from my vet to try to see if the smaller ones would take it and they show no interest in it so I guess they were full. I'm such a worrier!!:embarasse |
fat and nesting..A-OK Good...that they arent interested in the formula..they really need Moms antibodies the first 2-3 days! IF they are sleeping in a huddle when not nursing..they are content. Is Mom licking and stimulated them to pee and poop? That is another must. |
Yes, mom is licking them to make them pee and poo. They all sleep in a huddle or one will climb on her neck and sleep. I guess just the fact that they are so small worries me. I dont want to lose any. The smallest one wouldnt take any formula so I guess its eating from mom! |
how small? I am expecting my Ponytail Polly to whelp in a few days...woo hoo wondered, just how small is your smallest? Also my "Mom to be" went from 5.5 lbs to current 8.70 and I expect she will hit 9.0 at least...that is 3.5 lbs of pregnant weight...you had four...do you know how much your Mom gained? The vet palpitated and his best estimate was 4 or 5. Just anxious and wanting to see how she compared to your mom. |
