Yorkie Pup Vs. Pet Gate? Hi all, This may seem like a rather obscure question, but it's something that's only just occured to me and I need some opinions from people who are a little more 'yorkie-wise' than me! We're currently in the process of looking for a safety gate as our baby has just reached the walking stage and we're wanting to make sure she's as safe as possible. Now, as this year we've got our heart set on getting a yorkie pup, we're kind of wanting it to double up as a way to keep the dog out of certain areas. We've currently got our eye on this one: Childwood Tinto Auto Close Stair Gate | Prams.net But do you think a yorkie pup.. as small as they are.. would be able to fit through the gaps?! The whole point is to create some dog free zones, but, I mean, there's no point in getting one of these if it's not going to work? Thanks in advance. |
That looks just like the one we have. When Sasha was a puppy she went through those slots without slowing down! I attached a piece of plexiglass to it so that she could not go through it. Now that she is up to a whopping 4.5 pounds she cannot get through them anymore. |
Same here, my baby is 13 weeks old and weighs 2 pounds and he can slip right through. For us though, its SUPER IMPORTANT that he CAN'T get through because we're using that gate to block off entry into the staircase. He's so small that if he were to go up the stairs, he can fall right through the division in the railings and get seriously injured, if not worse. That's my biggest fear! So we did the same, put a net behind the gate completely so he can't get through even if he tried and it's worked great so far. The little terror can even get through the bars in the custom kennel I had built for them, LOL! But he's such a doll. We put the net up on the kennel too and now he doesn't get out. Watch that he is not able to climb that net lol, they have monkey genies in them lol. |

We used the thinnest plexiglass we could find, We drilled holes along the side and used plastic ties to attach it. Drill slowly or the plexiglass will crack. We had to cut it into pieces so that door would still open. You need a small piece on each side or they will get out there. 15 minute project |
I discovered that even my big boys can slip through the baby gates and fences that have only perpendicular rods or slats. My boys are tall and narrow. I also learned that adjustable baby gates with the criss-cross pattern pose a safety risk. Teddy got his leg caught in one of ours once while jumping excitedly. The horizontal tension bar is what caused the problem. Luckily I was close by and was able to extricate him before he hurt his leg. |
Okay super... thanks guys!! I'll make sure to put some plexiglass on it then to avoid the problem of the new addition getting places it shouldn't aha! |
They can definitely climb a net, if you have one determined enough. I also read about using plexi glass too while I was looking to puppy-proof a condo balcony. Apparently they sell plexi glass at Home Depot or your local hardware store. As a quick solution, you could maybe try putting fabric over the gate too (as long as they cannot grip onto the fabric to climb over). |
