Wormer for 4 week old pups Hi, haven't been on in awhile. Since joining I've added a second yorkie male and had a litter (not to my boy) my litter is now 4 weeks 3 days old and I have yet to worm them as all wormers say for upto a kilo. Can I ask what all you use please? Thanks in advance Haley. |
Nemex II (pyrantel) is appropriate for use on puppies. They should be dewormed at 2,4,6 and 8 weeks. Even if the dam showed no signs of harboring parasites certain hormones released in pregnancy can wake up latent parasites and cause the mother and babies to both become infested. They all need all the nutrition they can get so it is important to make sure they are all parasite free. Hope all is well with mom and babies- make sure to deworm all other animals on the property with a broad spectrum dewormer :yorkieboy: |
Oh I don't think we can get that here in the uk? Should of mentioned in my original post. Only puppy ones I've found is panacur paste, which my vet sold me then said because of their size it's to hard to dose them correctly so told not to use, panacur suspension but when I enquirer vet said 10% would be too strong and she wouldn't use it on such small pups so order 2.5% but they've stopped making that. And drontal suspension but the dose is for 1kg pups and they haven't replied to my email asking if it would be suitable for my litter! I got some advice from a breeder who says they use panacur paste but not until the pups are 5 weeks old so have been holding off, but would prefer to worm them for my own peace of mind. |
Hmm...the active ingredient is pyrantel pamoate but I see here it might be called something different in different parts of the world... https://www.drugs.com/international/pyrantel.html Panacur (fenbendazole, safe guard) is an excellent product and even kills tapeworm but yes, it is not appropriate for use until the pups are six weeks. Did your vet have a reccomendarion for a dewormer for pre six weeks? |
The only one they recommended after panacur was drontal suspension which states *Drontal Puppy Suspension is a pale red suspension for oral administration to puppies and young dogs. Each ml of suspension contains 14.4 mg pyrantel embonate and 15 mg febantel.* But the dose states 1ml per kilo so emailed the manufacturer asking if this product was suitable for my 300gram pups and if so at what dose, but I've had no reply what so ever! |
