5 newborns and wondering on dew claws and tails? My sweet 5 lb Kookie delivered 5 perfect babies about 48 hours ago. I am having an internal struggle regarding dew claw removal and tail docking. I just cannot find a reason that it is done other than for appearance. I have another 1 year old pup her full tail and dew claws in tact. I do have to trim the dew claw but I love her long tail. But since I will not be able to keep all 5 babies I must make a decision. The thought of hurting them unnecessarily is what I struggle with. I know it is customary in the us to dock the tail..but that little tail is so darn cute. Do you think I will have difficulty finding loving homes for them with their tails and dew claws intact. I look forward to your opinions...please be kind. |

Even though I love the tails, I think if you are not planning to keep your pups I would dock the tails. Yorkie lovers expect docked tails. In my opinion |
My yorkie has had two very bad incidents with dew claws as a lot of dogs do you need to remove them. |
Like immunizations, a moment of pain is worth that pound of prevention and I would definitely get the dew claws removed. As far as the tail docking, if you are not breeding registered dogs to the determined breed standard and they are all only pet quality, it does not seem as though the tails would be a issue anymore than that their ears be erect as standard states. So at that point it is an aesthetic issue and as per your preference. |
My 2 yr old 6 lb, yorkie has his tail intact and I would NEVER dock it! When he gets excited it goes in cirles and is so cute. Dogs communicate with their tails and I find the pratice disgusting even for show dogs. So unnecessary |
You willbe hard presses to find new homes for the puppies with intact tails, unless you come across someone who wants it that way. Most people looking for a Yorkie puppy will be expecting a docked tail. I have 4 puppies that are 2 weeks old and docked the tails on 3. We kept the tail on the smallest, as we are keeping her. Dew claws can get caught on things and rip, so we took the chance and had them removed as well. Even though I don't agree with it, and hate the idea, the breed standard does call for docked tails, so I went with breed standard. |

Docking tails before age 5 days old, the nerves have not completely developed to the tip of the tail and the babies will not "suffer" from having the procedure done....they yelp when the clamp is put on and then it is over so quickly, they stop crying immediately. I do my own tails, and they never cry about it again after the initial procedure is completed. |
