Meet Maverick 2 Attachment(s) Hi all! I asked a couple questions but didn't formally introduce my new little stud Maverick! Well, stud as in handsome little fella, not as in breeding :) He's now 13 weeks old. I got him early because him mama got sick and was unexpectedly spayed so he couldn't nurse. He's done really well. Went from a crate to a playpen and transitioning back to a crate. He's weighing in at a healthy 3lb 4oz with dad at 6lb and mom 8lb. He was by far the biggest in his litter (his brother literally 1/2 or less of his size). I'd guess he'll be a good 7lbs maybe. We've been doing ok with housebreaking, but not great. He knows exactly what to do outside, just can't always hold it. There's no doggy door, just mama and a leash :) I just purchased how to house train a dog in 7 days and looks forward to picking up some tips. I had a german shepherd who trained much easier, but we're adjusting. Just need more time and discipline I suppose! Nice to meet you all and your babies! |
Hello and welcome to YT. He is just adorable. Congrats ! |
Welcome to YT! Love the name, he's a definite cutie |
Thank you! And it would appear he may be floppy-eared but that's fine with us :) |

Welcome. He's so adorable!! |
Thank you all! Quick grooming question. I plan on keeping a puppy cut or something similar, not the longer show coat in him. My question id do you all recommend cutting the hair between the eyes, or just letting it grow out? I wash it and get the gunk out every night, but it seems like the hair gets in his eyes a lot. It may bother me more than him though. I've read different things and just wondered what most of you did. Thanks! |
Maverick is a little cutie. I highly recommend letting the hair grow and allow the weight of the hair to keep it away from the eyes. I use a Madan mustache comb or Chris Christensen butter comb to train the hair away from the eyes. Both are excellent, but the Madan is 1/3 the price. Jenny, YT member mimimomo, sells Madan and is wonderful to work with. toplinepet.com http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...ing-i-did.html http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...people-do.html |
Awesome! I'll have to pick up a comb. I have some clippers but he's way too hyper for me to attempt to use them. I'm not sure when he'll go in for his first grooming, I just bath him and snip the hair on his feet and under his tail myself for now. When do you think most pups go for their first grooming? |
He is adorable. I think his ears are trying to stand up, and if you trim the hair off 1/3 toward the tip and get the weight off, it will help them go up. On the other hand, I agree floppy ears are adorable too. Yorkies are known to be somewhat difficult to house train, so be consistent and patient, and don't give him too much freedom until he gets it, or things will go backwards. Brushing him often will get him used to being groomed, and you can go quite a while just touching up with scissors. |
Ok thank you! I'll have to pick up some blunt nosed scissors also. Boy you're not kidding about the house training are you. This guy is very difficult. At 4 months, he'll still have an accident every day if I'm not completely on top of it. Quite different than the last dog I house trained who was reliable in 6 weeks. Of course he happened to be one of he smartest dogs I've ever seen. Also a german shepherd, who's bladder was probably the size of Maverick's entire body! :D |
