Mork arrived at my apartment on November 12, 2013. She had a pretty rough start at my apartment and was sick with Kennel Cough by Tuesday. She was diagnosed and provided with antibiotics by Wednesday. However, by Thursday she developed pneumonia and was hospitalized. The woman we bought Mork from was nothing but help and covered all the costs of her antibiotics and vet bills. She seemed as concerned for my puppy, Mork, as I was.

We've received Mork back, still sick but not as sick, on Tuesday November 19, 2013. She's playful and happy but tires very easily. I'm also very happy that she is eating and drinking water on her own. She's my miracle pup.

We are told that if we hadn't brought her in as quickly as we had that she wouldn't have survived and that, as it was, it was touch and go for several days. We are planning another vet visit for the end of the week for a check up and follow up.

awww shes such a cutie pants. so thankful you reacted as quickly as you did. glad you are also doing a follow up visit...what a good mommy and so great the breeder covered the expenses. :) prayers for continued improvement and full healing mork.

She is adorable! I'm so glad your breeder stepped up without a fight to pay for the treatments. It is nice to hear about people doing the right thing instead of all the bad things we seem to hear about so often. I hope Mork continues to improve rapidly and that you will soon have that healthy puppy you thought you were getting. It stinks that she came to you sick, but your quick actions obviously kept her from being even sicker. :D

Update on Mork:

Mork went back to the Vet today and he says that she is recovering well. She still has the kennel cough but the doctor said that it is clearing up. He vaccinated her for everything but kennel cough today. He also thinks that she may have a urinary tract infection but that the antibiotics that she's been taking for kennel cough and pneumonia should clear that up.

She's been super playful which is awesome! I'm loving my little Mork!!!

she got vaccinated today?? personally I wouldve held off until she was fully recovered but hopefully she will have no side effects....glad she is still improving. :)

Yes. She did get vaccinated. She wasn't vaccinated against Kennel Cough today though. I was concerned about vaccinating her while she was still sick but the Vet thought she needed to be vaccinated. The Vet thought that because I live in an apartment complex and take her out to go potty that I should go ahead and get her vaccinated. He didn't say anything about the potential for side effects.

She has improved greatly. She's even playing and running.

mine just dont do well with mutiple shots when they are healthy so i do them all seperated. if mork is doing fine then that's awesome and yes probably best if you are in a complex with other pooches around. so glad she is getting better!!

Mork had her first Thanksgiving yesterday. No table scraps for her though. She really enjoyed the day full of running and playing.

She is doing so much better. However, we noticed a few days after we bought her that her little front legs were bowed. The Vet said she was fine but my mom accidentally let her jump off the couch on Monday (she was off before my mom could catch her) and my dad stepped on her paw on accident on Monday. This seemed to irritate her front paws. She also seems to be better in the morning than the evening. I think by the evening that she is tired.

The Vet told us last week that she had giardia and that she should be on medicine for 5-7 days. We brought her stool sample to the Vet this morning to make sure that it has cleared up.

She seems to be doing really well and absolutely loves to play. She loves playing with my brother's dog, Gizmo (shih-tzu/poodle mix), who is 15 pounds bigger than her. It is amazing how gentle this big dog is with her.

The one problem I have is that she bites A LOT! Is there a way to stop her from biting my hands? Also, she seems to want to nurse on me or my sister or the cats or Gizmo. Is that normal? How do we get her to stop that or should we even try?

How old was she when you got her? I got Bella at 9 wks, so she would nurse my fingers. I just let her do it and she out grew it. For the biting, try doing a little yelp and turning away from her. That's kind of how mom and litter mates would handle it. Or, you could just redirect her to a chew toy when she bites.

She was 9 weeks old when we got her. I've tried redirecting her with a chew toy and I think she prefers my hands but I'll try the yelping and turning.

Update 11/29/2013

I forgot to post earlier today that Mork already goes to the back door to let us know that she wants to go out potty! She has a few accidents but she's pretty much potty trained and in only a couple of weeks! I'm so proud of her!!

Update 12/1/2013

Mork went back to the Vet yesterday. My dad took her to his Vet. We had taken her stool there to see if she had giardia still and her office called and wanted to have a Vet appointment. Mork still has giardia and the Vet prescribed a different medicine and suggested mixing her food with Metamucil. She also suggested that we need to lightly pat Mork's side to help and make sure the mucus from kennel cough and pneumonia is cleared up.

While at the Vet, we asked about her food and the Vet said that Royal Canin was a good food for her. That she is getting enough nutrients.

I also wanted a second opinion on her bowed legs and I felt this Vet's exam was more thorough than the previous Vet. She has a level 1 luxating patella in her hind legs. I couldn't tell that her hind legs were bowed but apparently they are bowed. The Vet said that nothing needs to be done about the hind legs and that this is actually VERY mild and very common in Yorkies.

However, she is seeing an orthopedic surgeon on Wednesday about her little front legs. The Vet thought that her front legs weren't muscularly developed but wanted her to see a specialist. Apparently, my little Mork was kept in a cage that was too small for her and wasn't able to properly develop her muscles. I've been doing some of the exercises that the Vet showed us and she already seems to be improving.

It doesn't sound like my little Mork had a good start in life and that makes me sad but she's doing much better.

On a better note, though, she already goes to the back door to let us know she needs to go out potty. Also, the Vet commented on what a great personality and disposition my little princess has. She told us that Mork has been very well socialized.

Update 12/4/2013

Mork saw the orthopedic surgeon today and I got some good news. She has normal bone development! Yay! :D

She is still bow legged and the orthopedic surgeon said that she has slight (20%) bowing at the wrist. The orthopedic surgeon said she didn't need supplements, no special exercises and no vitamins. In fact, the orthopedic surgeon said that she should be treated as a normal puppy because she is a normal (even if she is a ridiculously cute) puppy. The orthopedic surgeon suggested that the cause had been poor nutrition before she became a part of my family.

I'm just so glad that she isn't in pain and that she is going to be okay! I have been so worried about my little princess.

Update 1/15/2014

I haven't done an update for Mork in a while. She's doing very well. Much better than she was when she first joined my family. Mork has all of her puppy shots and her rabies shot and she can go for walks in the park and meet other puppies now.

Mork does well with other puppies but seems to be cautious of people, especially children. A little more than a week ago, little Mork enjoyed puppy play time at the the pet store and she is signed up for puppy obedience school.

Update 1/16/2014

Mork has gained weight! She is now 6.2 pounds and can jump on the furniture.

Also, she is scheduled to be spayed next Friday. I'm so worried about her getting spayed. Oreo, who is slightly smaller than Mork, had such a rough time when we got her spayed. It was horrid. She was not feeling well for two weeks. The first night home, Oreo screamed all night and I slept on the floor with her for several days. I really hope Mork's surgery is much easier.

I believe it is because children move so quickly and yters are cautious as to where the children will be moving to next. Just MHO:)

Mork has made such good progress after a rough start.

Good luck with her spay. Be sure to do pre-op blood work (unless she has already had enough blood work done to cover areas of concern). And ask for pain meds when you take her home, so you'll have them on hand in case they are needed. It will help her recovery to be comfortable.

Have you decided how you'll keep her from licking stitches? Some get the Softee Collar from a member here, and some people use a babies onsie put on with snaps at the back.

With all 4 of my girls, the vet carefully did the stitches internally, and none of them licked.

Thank you. The Vet will be doing pre-op blood work, I believe. I can't believe how expensive it is to spay my pretty little girl.

I remember having pain meds for Oreo when we brought her home but we had to go back and get stronger stuff and Valium for her. Do Yorkies, because they are typically so small, have problems with getting spayed? I know it needs to be done but I'd like to know what to expect. Mork seems tougher than Oreo but I don't want her to be in pain (just like I wish Oreo hadn't gone through that pain).

How do the onsies work? I know with Gizmo that the cone was a terrible option. When my parents put his cone on, he'd just freeze. He wouldn't even eat or take treats with it on. And, with Oreo, she figured out how to take it off. The one her Vet gave was tied on with ribbon. She would twist it around so that the bow was parallel to the ground, put the bow on the ground and step on the edge of the ribbon, lift up, and then push the untied cone off. I don't remember how we ended up keeping her cone on (we did figure something out) but I do remember her getting an infection. I wish we had known there were other cone options back then.

Update 1/20/2014

Yesterday, Mork got to enjoy puppy play time. She did very well. They, also, let her sister (Oreo) join puppy playtime. Oreo only played for about 20 minutes and she mostly wanted the attention of the humans. However, I do find it very exciting that Oreo joined in and didn't growl at any of the puppies. We've had such a hard time getting Oreo used to having Mork around.

Just before Christmas, I thought that it would be nice to get a group photo of all three of the puppies. I am attaching a few from that photo shoot.

I'm sure Mork's spay will go just fine, she is a nice healthy weight. Yorkies don't have any harder time with spay than other breeds, but the tiny ones are of more concern.

You can get a newborn baby onsie and put it on with smooth side (back) toward her tummy and snaps up at her back. You will have to unsnap it for her to go potty though.

There is also a chance you won't need any of these, some dogs just don't lick and chew stitches.

My vet offered spay at a very affordable price, as an incentive to stop overpopulating. Also the local Humane Society here offers a $50. certificate toward cost of spay at any vet.

You might also want to get Mork microchipped while she is in there, and if she has any retained baby teeth this is a good time to have those removed.

Thanks MauiGirl! I'm going to find out if the Humane Society here does that. Mork's Vet charges $420 after all the blood work and everything. But it has to be done and, after our experience with Oreo, I'd rather have someone I trust who knows her and has her records do the surgery. As far as licking the stitches, I've found out that she will do internal stitches so I guess I don't have to worry about licking.

Mork has already been microchipped but I'm not sure how to use that. Also, she is only 4&1/2 months old and her teeth seem to have just started to fall out. But maybe that is something that should be asked to her Vet.
