Thinking of getting a Yorkie! Please help!! Hello All I'm new to YT. I figured this would be a good place to start as I take this journey to owning a new pup. I have always wanted a YT since I was a kid!! Parents couldn't afford but now I can! I've went through the pros and cons of having a YT but my work schedule is what concerns me. I work at night 12 hour shift 3 days a week, schedule varies weekly. My pup will probably be alone for more than 12 hours at night when I'm working. I don't have a sitter either(or at least a dependable one). What should I do??? I really want my own Yorkie, but I don't want the pup to be lonely and by himself. Will owning a Yorkie be a right choice for me?? Any advice will be appreciated. Thank You |
I got my first ever yorkie (Jack) January 2012. I work Monday through Friday, but my job allowed me to bring him to work with me. He was so tiny and I was worried to leave him all day. I found a vet close to my job because he had one spell of throwing up and they gave him an iv. Luckily that was the only scare. We added a female (Juliette) aka JuJu to our family about 6 months later. I still brought both of them to work with me till Juliette was 6 months old and they both became a lil much to handle while working. Now they stay at home confined to my bedroom with toys, chew sticks and occasionally tv to watch.I would say maybe find a older pup (two's even better), or if you get a young pup, look for a puppy daycare or groomer that can keep them while at work. You would be amazed at how many pup daycares there are. The scariest thing they go through as a young pup is Hypoglycemia. Good luck!!! |

Welcome to YT! :wavey: When I first came here I was in a similar situation, attending college, wanted a pup, but was concerned about leaving it alone for long periods every other day. I decided to listen to what other members told me, and to wait until life was a little more settled. That being said it's 3 years later and I'm still being patient. LOL. But one member told me something that really stood out, and that was to do what I HONESTLY felt was good for the pup....That's a decision you have to make. But I agree with the previous poster if you HAVE to have your yorkie now, a young adult would be better. Pups are BABIES imagine leaving a baby home alone for 12 hours. :( Good luck with your journey! |
Is there anyway that on your lunch break(or breakfast:)) you would be able to run home and check in on your little one? We got Gizmo when he was 8 weeks and my husband and I both work Mon-Fri but luckily our schedules are offset a little so he was never home alone for more then 5-6 hours. If you decide to get a young pup make sure that the first few days you are off work so that you can help them acclimate to your house, pee pad train (if necessary) and start to get your pup into a routine. I also like what the others said about maybe getting an older Yorkie so that you don't have to worry as much about longer periods of time and deciding what you think is best for your future pup.
