Nina Rodarce - March 5th 2013 We just got Nina 2 weeks ago and she is very tiny, weighed 1.3 lbs when we got her. She only wants to eat soft food and even thought I mix it with the dry food, she eats the wet and leaves the kibbles. We weaned her out of the bad food the owner was feeding her and she is eating Wellness now but I am having a hard time getting her to eat the dry food. I have tried 2 different kind of ry food and the last one is very tiny. She also doesn't like any treats that we have tried to give her. Any advice? |
What was the "bad food" the breeder had her on? I personally do not advocate pulling a tiny little puppy off what the breeder has weaned them onto, immediately when a new owner gets the baby home. New babies are trying to adjust to so many new experiences, I like to encourage new owners to at least leave ONE thing the baby is familiar with, the food she was weaned onto. Then, as the pup gets settled in and accustomed to new surroundings and new schedules, usually around 8 months old is a good time to change puppy diet if you are so inclined. She is very tiny and eating is critical to her to prevent possibility of hypoglycemia....when diet changes are made this early, they usually stop eating, and then you are setting yourself up for a bunch of problems. |
The breeder was feeding her for dry food IAMS mini chunks for adult dogs and Authority for puppies. I kept her with that food for a few days but she was not eating the dry food, just the wet and I started mixing it with Wellness wet food very slow. Finally after almost 2 weeks I transitioned to just wellness but she only eats the wet food even though I always mix some dry food in. |
