Pottying on rugs Gracie's breeder had hardwood floors and so do we. However, I am pretty sure she potties on the throw rugs around the house. She will go on pee pads in her ex pen because there is no other choice but when she is out she runs right to the rugs to potty. I am going to remove all the rugs for a while becsuse I don't think she likes to go on the wood. I am inclined to put potty pads in every room that she goes in so there is always one around but I don't want to confuse her. Is it better to teach her to just go in one area? |
I think I should explain that I think she was allowed to potty on the throw rugs at the breeders house. I'm pretty sure that's why she is using ours. |
Was she trained to potty on washable pads or even regular potty pads? I started with the disposable pads and then went to the washable ones but my girls started confusing them with my throw rugs so I went back to the disposable pads and...problem solved. |
The breeder said she used disposable pads but when we were there I saw her pee on the throw rugs a couple times and the breeder just kind of ignored it. I think she was just allowed to do it. Hubby just texted and said she just peed on our bed. She hasn't done that before so I'm assuming that was mostly his fault lol |
I had to get rid of all throw rugs the first couple of years, I now can have one, but I think it's very hard for them to tell the difference between throw rugs and a pee pad. Once they go on them, the smell is there, so it's impossible for them to tell the difference. Be sure to use an enzyme cleaner to clean the rugs and follow directions carefully, if you want to teach them not to go again. Maybe don't allow them access to the rooms with throw rugs, unless you are right there. |
Yeah it's definitely going to take some patience. She is only allowed (with supervision) in the kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom. We don't really use the other rooms in the house. If there is no supervision then it's the expen. She's fast though! I'll try bare floors to see how that works. Good thing she's so darn cute! |

I think that every day - good thing they are so dang cute or there would be a lot of getting in trouble going on around here - LOL. |
I, personally, would train the pup to go only in one specific spot. Praise like crazy when they potty in the correct place, reprimand with a stern "NO!" when you catch them going potty in the wrong place. Keep "reminding" her of where she should go for potty- when you are in a different room bring her in to her pads and tell her to potty, if she does, reward her. She'll figure out quickly that she can leave the room she is in to go to the pads to potty. As for the rugs, you'll probably need new ones once you know that she can be trusted not to potty on them but I wouldn't get rid of them completely right now because how else is she supposed to learn that she can't use them for potty breaks? That's me, though. I don't completely remove a potential problem, I use it as a training tool. |
Potty Training I'm having the same problem, except mine is older.. Hollee is nearly 5mths & runs ahead of me to the door when I say 'come on lets go and do wee wee'..she does it very readily, but she won't poo out there. We have had a lot of wet weather, but I decided to teach her to still go on wet grass..which she does very quickly. She prefers rugs for her poo. I have put down disposable training mats in two rooms which she does use & at times has done her poo on them, sometimes has just missed, but still will go on the rugs. Problem is I just don't see her even though we are watching a lot of the time and taking her out regularly. AQlso she's not allowed out on her own, so although we are teaching her to go out she's not allowed in her time?? Oh dear, quite confusing.:aimeeyor:rolleyes: |
Yes it is very difficult. I can see how picking up the rugs is probably the wrong approach and I don't mind replacing them if need be. We are still very far from done with potty training but I do see some progress. Until I turn my back! She is so fast! I sometimes think she watches for me not to be watching so she can go lol. She has also peed on my bed several times. She does not sleep with us, but we do allow her on the bed to play when we are with her. What a stinker! |
Kiki was doing great until we gave her a little freedom and she found the bathroom rugs! I removed them all together and we are back on track of potty pad only |
I have wall to wall carpet. My YT pup would use the pads, sometimes in her playpen. I bought a dog litter box w/fake grass. She now uses that consistently instead the pads. The grass is machine washable. I still need to redirect her a couple of times a day to the grass when she is out of her play pen, but she seems much happier with that than the pads. On my carpet, I used spot carpet cleaner, Natures Miracle and white vinegar. My YT is not fond of the vinegar smell. |
If you really value the throw rugs, I would definitely put them away for the time being. My YT thinks potty pads are for shredding. That is why I use the doggy litter box w/the fake grass. |
Yup like said before. Get rid of all the rugs and only use one potty pad. So she will always go in the same spot. If she always goes in the same spot for a year+ when the rugs come back it may not be as confusing? And only supervised time in the other rooms. Baby gate one room when you don't have 100% time to watch her. |
