Jazzy had 6 puppies! My first time mommy Jasmine had 6 puppies on Thursday. They seem to be doing well, but the smallest one is not gaining weight as much as the others. Jazzy also keeps carrying her around and trying to hide her. I've had to remove everything from the floor of my walk in closet so that she will stop trying to bury puppies! I am having such a hard time listening to the puppies scream when she picks them up and carries them around. Is this normal??? Should I be doing anything?? Someone suggested they might be cold and that's why she is burying them, so I bought a dog heating pad. She does carry the other ones around, but 90% of the time it's the littlest one, Diana. I have been making sure that Diana is nursing, but I'm worried. They are going to the vet tomorrow for their tails and dewclaws. Any ideas on what to ask the vet would be appreciated. |
I would make a cozy spot for her and the pups. I always used a big box that they could snuggle together in. I never put anything but papers in the bottom while they where so tiny. And had a heater in the same room with them to keep it very warm. They like it at least 80. Mom did fine with that also I let her come and go cut the box down so she could get in and out but not the puppies. Lexi had three litters of seven and raised ever pup.. I have since decided there are enough yorkies looking for homes that have been put in shelters and old breeding dogs that no one cares about. That maybe I should not breed.. Good luck with the pups and do share pictures.. I think if you get her comfy she will stop trying to move them... Hope this helps |
Congrats, I always let my runt feed before the others and at least 3 times a day, I let her nurse alone with mama.. can't wait to see pictures... |
Congrats on the new pups ! It may just be the location of the closet where you have them. I think by taking them and carrying them around she is trying to tell you she isn't comfortable where they are. Try putting them in an area of the house that is not in the general population of the family. A laundry room or different closet away from the every day foot traffic might work best. This is just my guess but she may be trying to rid the runt from the litter because she doesn't feel it will survive. Mothers will reject the runt. I have heard of this happening, but never experienced it. Be prepared to do bottle feeding if necessary. Keep a close eye on the runt and be sure it gets fed. Maybe in a one on one with mom. As for the bedding I find that using rugs or heavy quilt like materials works best. That way that are harder for mamma to move around and to bury the pups. She does this because she is hiding them. It's good to keep an eye on them but until they are a bit older try to keep any young ones out of the area. |
Congratulations! I would definetly try placing them in a diffrent location. She'll let you know when she feels comfortable. Josie was also was carrying and dropping her runt off at us. Someone here recommended that she just wasn't getting enoughto eat. Try some Goats milk, you can buy it at some groceries store. It's in the Milk section. Warm up just the same way you would a babies bottle. Our puppies loved it. Josie had 4 her 1st time and 5 her 2nd. The heating pad, worked great for us. We always checked it to make sure it wouldn't get too hot. We also placed another blanket on top of it. Everyone here has given some really great feedback. Make sure to take lot's of pic's they grow so fast. |
2 Attachment(s) Thanks for all the advice. Todays tail docking and dewclaws went well, the vet said that I should supplement the 2 smallest puppies, Diana and Peach. When we came home from the vet I decided to lay down. Jazzy and the pups were in my closet and of course, she picked up Diana to move her somewhere. I decided to let her put the puppy wherever she wanted, so she burrowed under the covers and deposited the puppy between my legs. She then went back and got the other 5 and did the same. After that, she went to the foot of the bed and took a nap. Well, she was the most relaxed that she has been, but I can't let the puppies sleep in my bed!! Not quite sure what to do... Attached are puppy pics, not sure if it worked though... |
My Miah was caught trying to bring a litter of pups up to our bedroom once. One pup was already in her doggy bed that is under my night stand. She had one in her mouth on her way up the stairs when she got caught but I didn't find that out until I rounded them up and saw that one was missing. It was crying out and I searched and searched to finally find the little one inside one of my shoes sitting on the stair step. She just wanted to be close to her mamma' (ME) It looks like she is wanting you to be the Sargent mother to them. I would guess that you too are Extremely close !! How did she do once she was able to take a long much needed nap? Have you tried to move them to a different area? I'm not sure that this will work, but seeing how she is so close to you and wanting to be by your side at all times. You may want to try getting an under the bed storage box and putting the pups in there. That way if you see mother getting frustrated you can simply move her and the pups closer to you and if need be even into your bedroom at night. If you can find one that will fit into the closet you have her in that would work. You can alway move them back to the closet when they are a bit older and mamma' isn't spending all of her time with them. Useually about 2 -3 weeks. It seems like a lot of work but worth it to know that she will feel safe so that she is not moving them around so much. |
I would put her as close to your bed as you can then. Find something that works. My Lexi was the same way wanted to be close. She would feed them clean them and then spend time with me. That is why keeping it nice and warm helped. The pups did great and mom too. They are so cute enjoy they grow up so fast ...I never did use a heating pad worried to much about that but a extra heater in the room you chose works great..keep posting pics as they grow. And congrats again |
That is too adorable. Sounds like Jazzy is tired and handing over her precious pups to who she trusts the most so she can get some rest. Very intelligent new mommy. |

Congrats on your litter of 6!! When my girls have puppies, their "home" for the first few weeks is with their pups in an xpen with a large under the bed storage box for their bed. It is lined with a bathroom rug that fits snuggly on the bottom with a heating pad on low on one side (under the rug) to keep the pups warm with room on the opposite side so mom can move to cool off when she wants to. Since we have other dogs in the house, the "nursery" is kept in the spare bedroom away from the commotion of the other fur kids and I usually will move into the spare room with the new family for a few weeks. This way mama is comfortable having me near and I am close enough to keep a watchful eye on the new pups...........and mama too. Good luck with your new litter............you are in for fun X6 before too long.:D |
Mama on the move My girl had five and she always wanted to bring them to me. She just LOVED her babies, and didn't want to leave him in her nursery room when she wanted to come hang out with mom and dad, and her "boyfriend" :D |
Congrats to mama, surrogate mama and babies |
Congratulations |
Cutest thing I ever heard, her leaving her precious bundles with you, brought a tear to my eye! Congrats on 6 real beauties! |
