How to mark new puppies for I.D. Hey, any good suggestions on how to distinguish each of my six pups so I can keep track of who belongs to who. We just had someone pick one of the girls and we marked her belly with a sharpie(perm marker) in a smile face. NOt sure if that will work. THanks. |
Seems like I've read where breeders will use nail polish and paint one nail of each pup a different color. Your permanent marker will stay for awhile but will eventually come off. |
Mark them with colors A way that i have seen work is by using multiple colors of colars like pink and red for girls and blue and black for boys. |
The breeder I got LuLu from used color collars (not sure what the collars were made of, though). The vet used the collars to distinguish the pups from one another to keep up with each pup's visits. This also allowed her to know who belonged to who after the pups acquired new mommies & daddies. :D I do know you have to be very careful that the collars are adjusted as the pups grow...don't want it to get too tight! |
I have heard of them taking food color or marker and color the inside of the ear. It would have to be reaplied. I have never had a litter over 3 so I have never had to worry.lol |
This is what we used with our Aussie litter..... Whelping ID Bands - HOME I ordered them and used them for just a few days (until their coloring was more pronounced). Luckily we only had two pups that were the same color but they were girl and boy so this litter was not nearly as hard to distinguish as identical little Yorkies would be. I highly recommend the little fleece collars though. |

1 Attachment(s) I usd 1/2" felt strips in different colors. I had to change the collars only 2x in 12 weeks. Worked great, I could finally stop picking each on up to look at the markings and equipment to figure who was who. |

I do something similar -- I use permanent magic markers to mark inside the ear and a dot on each belly. On one occasion I had two litters born within two weeks of each other - Chizzie had 6 and Chattie had 3. There are enough colors to go around, but the large Sharpie sets are rather pricey. So if you have more pups than colors you can two colors on one pup OR be creative and draw a design on the pups belly - since I am not an artist I kept it simple - square, circle star. I never put anything around the neck of a young pup - except under constant supervision while showing pups to prospective moms and dads. I feel like it is way too dangerous - pups can get "hung up" and strangle - it only takes a matter of minutes to lose a life. |

None taken, no worries... I did think about that, but I had no problems. The kids never played with it. By 9 weeks I could tll them apart and they came off. But, I would never put a collar on my girl. |
i know you may not want to do this with a yorkie (since the have long fluffy hair) but with our labs we would take a clippers and shave a spot on there tummy or backside of 1 of the legs in different spots, or even under there tail, and just redo it when we see that the hair is starting to grow back alittle-we tried collars and polish ect---but they are so full of it as pups and needing a bath almost daily (messy buggers) this was the best way for us not to lose track of whos who, and whos going where. We did it when the forever home ppl came to pick a pup out, that way they were sure it was the puppy they wanted. |
