Concerned Hi, I have been helping my elderly parents with thier yorkie Beba who has goner into labour today. She is 62 days today so ready for the pups the problem I have is that she started whelping this morning at 7am with the water sack coming out and breaking (our first ever pregnancy so wasnt sure about that bit) now all has gone rather quiet, she is still having contractions but no signs of puppies as yet. 10 hrs later! I have called a friend who is an expert and she thinks everything is ok just giver her time. Beba is a very placid dog who loves to be around humans so she will not leave us or give birth anywherte alone. can anyone tell me if there is a time limit I leave before I realy panic and call the vet. She seems fine, not distressed at all but it is her first time so not sure will be able to do whats supposed to be natural! help! x |
You should post this in the breeder forum. I've never bred but I think I would call the vet and ask. |
Do you have the number for the vet your parents use? Do you know how many she is having? Every female is so different in this area. Some can go longer if they are not having strong contractions. Is she having strong contractions? Pup(s) could be too big to pass through the birth canal. I wouls call the vet and see what they want you to do. |
The puppy may be stuck. My Kayla had one fine but three more were delivered by C-section. Please get her to a vet. 10 hours is to long.... |
It's been my experience that if you have a sack breaks and no puppy within an hour, you need to get to the vet because for most of us that would be another hour and after 3 hours, your puppy probably isn't alive anymore. After the puppy dies it starts to rot, (not to mention it's holding up the passage for the other puppies). There is a reason that this puppy didn't come out and it's probably too big to pass through the birth canal. Your first instincts were right and that would have been and still is to get to the vet/hospital as soon as possible. I hope your girl is ok. I have seen people that wait too long, all pups die and the dam dies from septicemia. I will pray that your girl and pups are ok. Please let us know. |

everything fine Just to let you all know I called the vet and feel a little silly< the sac that I thought was babies was just her waters breaking!! puppies will be fine but could take upto 3 days to have them, all dogs are different. She was up and walking around with an hour of my post on here! still no puppies but hopefullyy soon, sleepless night im sure!! thanks for the advice x |

If indeed your girls' water broke, she is and has been in 2nd stage labour. # Stage 2: is active labor. The fetal membranes rupture (often called the "water breaking") and the first fetus enters the pelvic canal, triggering Ferguson's reflex and strong labor contractions. Normally the birth of a puppy should be seen within one to two hours of these strong contractions. The bitch may then rest several hours between pups. Disturbance of this natural progression results in a difficult birth or dystocia. Dystocias are usually classified as to whether they are due to inadequacies of the bitch or to complications with the puppies. Birthing problems that primarily involve the bitch include: ~ Physical abnormalities of the birth canal. This includes problems such as a malformed vagina or an old pelvic fracture. ~ Primary uterine inertia or failure to go into Stage 2 labour. In these animals, separation of the placenta from the uterus occurs, but no puppies are delivered. A greenish black vaginal discharge is observed before the birth of any puppies. The puppies inside the uterus will die without surgical intervention. ~ Secondary uterine inertia or exhaustion of the uterine muscles. These animals stop labor during Stage 2 and require assistance to continue. Problems due to the puppies include: * A pup that is too large. * Improper positioning of the puppy in the birth canal. * Dead puppies, which fail to trigger whelping because there is no increase in cortisol. Combinations of problems due to the dam and the pups also occur. For example, a bitch with only one or two pups may not be able to trigger whelping in a normal manner, resulting in primary uterine inertia. Small litters can also grow too big in the uterus and may cause a fetal oversize dystocia. CALL THE VETERINARIAN WHEN 5) No progress has been made towards the delivery of a pup after: * initial labor over 3 hours * hard straining over 30 minutes between pups * weak intermittent labor of over 2 hours between pups * no labor over 4 hours between pups In addition to the emergency situations described a dystocia should be suspected if: * one to two hours have passed after beginning Stage 2 labor without a puppy * more than three hours of rest have occurred between puppies * if the bitch has been in hard labor for 30 minutes with no progression toward birthing a pup. This is a lot to read and there is even more in the link but I didn't know if you would go to the link so I wanted to put enough here that you would understand why I think based on what you are telling us happend (her water broke) and that the vet said it could take up to 3 DAYS who ever told you that is wrong!!!! You have had too many people tell you otherwise so there must be a reason you don't want to take her to a vet. I'm sorry for being blunt but if it is as you've told us, your girl and puppies will probably not survive. It's probably already too late for the puppies, I just needed to show you why we are so insistent. I am not a vet, just a breeder of this small breed for 15 yrs. |

Some people need to learn on their own. This is sad I hope the mama and babies will be okay. My cat gave birth before and I know it's different but it definitely didn't take anywhere near this long for her to birth the kittens and if it did I would of been out the door not waiting 10+ hours. Sounds like she hasn't had vet care during her pregnancy :( |

The suspense is killing us here! Please let us know how mom and/or pups are doing? Were you able to take them to the vet; please tell me it was a different vet than the one who told you labor would last 3 days. :/ I hope everything is okay. I'm worried for you. |
I do hope she posts an update even if it's a sad lesson learned. I'm sure we have all had at least one or two of them in life. Hope this wasn't the case, I'd just like to know the outcome to close the chapter on this one in my soul. |
