formula for puppies Can anyone help me out with a puppy that is not nursing enough and keeps getting weak between meals. He is now 2 weeks old and about half the size of his letter mates. He doesn't suck as hard and they keep knocking him off. I am giving him his own time with mom after they are all finished but I thought he may need a supplement. I have never had to buy one before. Anyone have a favorite? Are there better ways to feed it then the bottles from a pet store? (syringe?) I'd appreciate any information you have. He's very sweet just having a hard time keeping up. |
you need to put him on BEFORE the others drain mama not after AND you might need to hold your hand to the side to hold him on so he won't get knocked off. this so often happens when one is smaller than the others. if I have to supplement, I use Esbilac Puppy Supplement. i use a syringe but you have tobe very careful that you don't push it into his lungs or he will get aspiration pneumonia. I use one of those long nose syringes and they can almost suck it out on their own without it being pushed or else i put a nipple over the syringe and just push enough to fill the nipple then let him suck it out. |
Thank you, I'll try it tonight. I appreciate your help. I'll keep you posted! He'll be fine but I just want to be sure he gets all the extra help he can get. |
My puppies are now 5 weeks and the smallest got a bottle for two weeks. It was Esbilac Milk Replacement for puppies. He would get too tired nursing so didn't get his share. The supplements helped. It helped him get a little extra and now he makes sure he gets his share. So you may want to try this. |
It's working! I bought some Esbilac last night and he ate like a little pig!! He is very quick to figure it out and I will continue this until he is "weaned" with his siblings. I thank you for your quick replies and so does Toby (my son named him for a character from West Wing). |
Sooo nice to read your tiniest one is eating well now. Can't wait to see pictures. It is heartwarming to see other experienced yters share their advice :D which in many cases such as this can help save a little life  |
K9 puppy gold is excellent too! I would still let him nurse before the others and then need be supplement. The real stuff is the best :) glad to hear he's doing good thou! |
