Well, puppies are all growing and I am noticing slight changes in their coloring, but I am now concerned with the last one that was born, especially. I have been noticing the last two days how eager she is to eat, and really have to fight to get her to swallow properly, i keep pulling bottle out of her mouth every two seconds or so just to make her swallow what she already has, she seems to be choking on it a lot. I thought maybe she is eating too fast, but she didnt even take very much in today and it started shooting out of her nose, I am wondering if we have a cleft palate issue? Does anyone have pics of cleft palate? Mom goes to vet saturday to remove stitches, I will be taking pups with me to show doctor. I just dont have any more money now, we have shelled out over $1200 trying to keep mom and puppies healthy and I just dont know what to do next. I dont want pnuemonia to become an issue. I go back to work after having two weeks vacation to deal with all of this, I just am not real comfortable here, something doesnt feel right. If she wasnt growing at all, I could say yes, we definitely have a problem, but how can she be growing so much? She has doubled her weight, although she is an ounce smaller than the rest of them. |

Actually, when he was that young, his cleft was only a pin prick size, and you couldn't see it at all. If your puppy is gaining steadily, keep up the good work. if she is aspirating, use a baby bulb syringe to suction her nostrils. Hold her in one hand, close to your chest, securely. Wrap your hand around her head with her muzzle between your first and middle fingers. Use your other hand to suction. Put your ear on her body, next to her lungs, and see if she is wheezing. If pneumonia sets in, she could be gone within hours, so keep an eye on her. |
update on cleftie, yep, that is what doc suspects too, but too early to do anything, obviously. All the others are gaining, she is almost two ounces behind the biggest and a little shorter than the rest. It is very hard to feed her without her sneezing formula, she is hungry and wants to gobble it up fast. But I am just trying to be patient with her. They have all opened eyes, and yesterday morning I trimmed all their nails with baby clippers. I hope its that easy when they get older. Somehow I doubt it... I noticed they all seem to have water coming out of their nostrils, and they all have watery stool that shoots out  Hopefully thats normal while they are on formula, mommys stool has gotten much better since I put her on dry puppy food. (She still gets her daily yogurt treat though) Hubby took back the kodak easy share, turns out it is not so easy after all, he will get something else and we will post updated pics soon. I have to go back to work today after taking the last two weeks off to be with mommy and babies, I dont want to go!!!!!!! More later..... |

Zacchie is right at 6 pounds, and the same size as the runt of his litter. Here is the thread I started way back when. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...eft-puppy.html I didn't start it until he was eight weeks old, when I found this forum. To read what I wrote when he was younger, go to my blog at there's a circus in my brain and click on the label Zaccheus on the left side of the page. Scroll down to the bottom and read to the top. I did feed him with a bottle, eventually switching to a tube. Now he is almost one year old, and eats regular food, and drinks out of a water bottle that hangs on his crate. We have decided not to have corrective surgery because he is very healthy and strong. We don't want to mess up what's working for him. He is healthy in every way. We don't have problems with stuff getting in his cleft anymore, and he doesn't know he's different. I'll post some pictures of his cleft, so you can see what it looks like. |

Just checking in for an update. Prayers for you. |
Poor thing!! I hope everything turns out ok!! |
They are CUTEEEEEEEEEEEE |
UPDATE! I haven't been on much lately kindof had my hands full, but things are calming down a bit now. I had two weeks off work and spent ALL of it with the puppies, and so when I went back to work I was completely drained of energy, then went on overtime, good grief! The puppies are three weeks old now, all have opened their little eyes and still drinking formula and are even walking some! They are also peeing and pooping on their own, I had the misfortune of finding that out while I was holding one of them on my lap and petting her. hehe. I am a bit more careful now. I am about ready to change them from the whelping box to a gated pet yard but just want mommy to be able to jump in there with them, so still trying to figure that out. I dont want to spend any more money than I have to at this point, I am already buried, lol. As far as the cleft palate, I just dont think so. I think she is just a pig and ate too fast. She is no longer shooting formula from her nose, and is actually bigger than one of the other girls now. Stitches are still in their little tails, I thought they would fall off, I think I will call doc tomorrow just to verify, I hope I wasnt supposed to bring them back in, they were done two weeks ago! Hubby has now bought and taken back THREE, COUNTEM, THREE cameras now. I will kill him if he does it again, I want pictures of my babies to post! They are so adorable now that they can sit up and look at you and walk, I love it!! Oh yeah, mommy is doing good now, she is an ok mom, not the greatest I think, but not terrible. She is a first timer, so maybe that is it. Thats all for now. The SECOND we get another camera and get it charged, I will post more pictures, lol. And I am burning the receipt so he is stuck with it. :D |
So happy they are doing so well:) Yes, we need pictures:thumbup: |
