Free Yorkie/Shi Tzu Mixes Admin approved this post: I notice an ad today for free yorkie / shi tzu mixes in one of our local papers and thought someone living in my area who was looking for a low cost puppy might be interested. Here is the ad: FREE PUPPIES 1/2 Yorkie,1/2 SHIHTZU 806-791-1234 |
Tara, could you contact the person who put in the ad and ask them to PLEASE,PLEASE charge something for those babies. I ask that they charge at least the cost of the ad and 1 vet visit. They can always refund the money after the freebie is vetted or something. People are too quick to give up a puppy if they have not invested money in it. In my area, freebies have ended up frequenty as fighting dog bait..Horrible, but true. So, I decided I would call these people and make that suggestion. Even if the ad says the pups are FREE, the ad is not!!! |
Oh my!! OMG, Fighting Dog Bait!! I can't believe people would do that, but of course we all know what type of world we live in now. I will contact her and try to persuade her to charge something for the puppies and share my concerns with her. About the cost of the ad, here if you give the animals away free, the ad is free, it is part of their way to help animals find good homes instead of going to the shelters. |
I am sorry to hear that free ads are considered a good thing. That only means more puppies/dogs can end up in situations where they might be neglected or in danger. Of course, everyone is entitled to do what they want with their animals. I have no idea who s selling or who is buying them, but as a general rule there is no pre-placement checks and NO follow up.. If I sound like snob, sorry. I help place toy dogs that can no longer be kept by the owner but thw owner and the new owner do the dealings. I act as a third party and do the initial interview. It has worked out well, so far. I insist there be a charge for the dog but I do my part FREE! |
Once I thought people couldn't be so cruel to do such a thing but I was wrong. I meet a guy that would look for ads for free kittens and use them as bait to kill coyotes. VERY SICK GUY!!! |
You do not sound like a snob at all. I'm sure the people at the newspaper here never thought that by giving free ads to those needing to find a puppy a home they could be putting the puppy in danger. Often things are done with the best intentions, but the consequences are not fully foreseeable. You have a very valid point and raise some very serious issues. I must admit I never saw a problem with free ads or free animals until you mentioned it. It's like a light bulb went on in my head and I totally see where you are coming from. I'm even thinking about e-mailing my local newspaper and expressing those concerns. By the way, I think what you do is wonderful. It is very caring of you to donate your time and effort in such a way. |
Free? I can't imagine the people who think they want one and then realize they don't. They dont have to research the breed or save up or anything if it's free! I wish I lived closer and could take one! I think shorkies are just the cutest ever! The girl on here that owns Ruby, the shorkie, I just think she's the sweetest person and after seeing all those cute pics of Ruby, I wanted one just like her, hehe! I wish that lady would ship b/c I'd pay whatever it took! |
Kittens as Bait YorkieAgility, That is horrible!! He probably tells people he wants them for his daughter or something too!!! Some people are just sick! |
Whispersmom is right. In fact petfinder.com has a classifieds section that is free to post pets needing homes but they have a warning that ads listed as free pets will not be approved and posted. They recommend you charge a fee even if a small one for the safety of the animals. |
Valid, valid points! Be very wary of 'free puppies', people get them for all sorts of things. You don't have to take the money, but at least ask for it in the ad. People will also get them and turn around and sell them for outrageous prices to just anyone. Also, they will sell them to research labs (I hear they love the smaller breeds). When we got our Cosie, the lady was giving them away (chi's, no papers) but she put $150 in the ad and asked for references. Imagine how happy we were when she told us to keep our money to help take care of the puppy. Her hubby was a vet so she wasn't out anything on the litter. Sure wish I could find another deal like that. We joke that she was the best five bucks we ever spent (that's what the gas cost to go get her). Everyone on here is just looking out for these little creatures that have no voice and rely on someone else to speak up for them. Windy and Lida Rose |
i understand what you guys are saying but how about people like me who love my animals but dont believe in paying 1200.00 for one i mean if i saw an ad for a free yorkie i would be all over it i cant afford to buy one right now and Lycan was free because she was a mix. I think to many people are making a profit off of love. Just my opinion |

I will have never thought that things like this can happen. It never cross my mind that puppies advertised as Free can end up as bait. I will love to get a playmate for Gucci but we are going thru financial problems so is impossible. SO a free ad sounded great for me, but I agreed if is for the best of the pups then a fee should be charge. |
Free giveaways!(those that cannot speak for themselves! A woman locally was telling me this young man answered an ad for freee Kittens,he went & got 2 free, called back a week later asking if she had any more,he wanted the rest... She asked him why he wanted more Kittens & he said i feed them to my Snake  |
