Looking in VA :) First I'd like to say that I'm so glad I found YT. Everyone here seems so friendly and helpful. There is a real sense of community here. :) My family and I looking to add to our family. We decided that a Yorkie would be a good fit. We'd like to rescue or adopt one, but can't seem to find one in our area (Fort Belvoir, VA / Washington DC) or that will adopt to a home with a child (she's almost 9). So that has us looking for a reputable breeder. Ideally, we'd rather not ship and would like to meet the pup before finalizing anything. We're a military family and still have a few moves ahead of us before we retire. We can't guarantee if we'll have a big yard with every move and feel a smaller sized Yorkie would be the better fit for us. So we're looking for one that won't get much bigger than 5-6lbs. Our new addition would definitally be an inside dog with lots love lavished upon it. We currently do have a nice size backyard and a wonderful neighborhood for walks. He/she would even have some kitty siblings to play with. That is if they can be roused from their perpetual naps. lol Now for the really tough part. Hopefully it won't spark too many giggle fits. :D We have $400 or a bit more if we find someone who accepts a credit card. We know that it's probably near impossible, but still have hope we'll be able to find our furbaby! :) Thank you and we look forward to learning and sharing here at YT. |
Welcome It is so great that you are out doing your research before jumping in to the world of yorkies! Yorkies are amazing and wonderful babies. If $400 is really your target, please be careful. Most quality breeders do not sell their babies at that price. Quality breeders thouroughly check both parents to help eliminate/reduce the risk of health issues. Puppy mills and back yard breeders don't charge as much, but you run the risk of heriditary issues as well as socialization issues. Also, as another thought, as a military family you are subject to moving. You have kitty siblings, as in plural? The govt will only authorize two pets to any overseas moves, so if that were to happen, you would have to make a heartbreaking decision on which two. Another member recently agonized over that exact issue, fortunately the orders were cancelled and she didn't need to rehome her baby. You may be able to adopt a furbaby that someone is rehoming for around that price range. Usually, I consider that the initial cost of the baby is not where the expense lies. Furbabies can be expensive, from preventative care to emergency care. Many of the operations these babies have cost from one to three thousand dollars, and these operations are not usually elective. I recently lost one of my babies, his vet bill, from the day of his accident was nearly $400. And it was definitely money well spent, even if he still went to the rainbow bridge. Best wishes in your search. |
I have 2 larger pups that I'm selling for $800. but I know that's over budget for you. I do know someone who may be able to help you though. Her name is Sherri Huff and she's the Va. director of yorkshire terrier rescue. She may have a rescue at present and she is located in Ruckersville ( above Charlottesville). If your interested in her number pm me and I'll give you the info. |
Thanks for the good advice. :) We do have 2 cats. I was not aware of the 2 pet max for overseas. My husband and I have talked about options for if and when that happens in regards to how we'd handle that as a family though. A lot would depend on the circumstances of his assignment. IF, we did go overseas we have a wonderful family support system. I'm sure one of our family would foster one or more of our pets until our return. So far we've been extremely blessed to have had the stability of 4yrs between assisngments. Hopefully our luck will continue. :) I knew the Yorkie was prone to knee problems, among others. The more I read the more it seems that it's more of a when than if scenerio. All we can do is hope for the best and plan for the worst. Having a yorkie in the family can't be all doom and gloom though. There are too many happy and healthy furbaby families. We will keep all these things in mind while we search for our match. :) We will be careful. The information here as been wonderful and helped us a great deal. |
I'm working very hard to eliminate lp in my line with my redleg. It seems that over the years we have refined them and they are beautiful but they are weaker as well. Redlegs are throwbacks and Roxie has the best legs I've ever seen on a yorkie, she also has rock hard cartlidge. Connor's dad runs rally and agility so there is hope for the yorkie. Shop for your new family member carefully and don't be afraid of making a yorkie your own. |
*UPDATE* Thank you for all the wonderful help during our search. We brought our little boy home on the 16th! :dogwalk: |
