I am wanting him to go to a home with a fenced in yard- we live by a main highway, and he has run out there several times, and thank god traffic stopped so i could get him, he does not do it all of the time, but I would rather lose him to someone that is going to take care of him than to lose him to him dieing from getting hit. :( I could not live with myself!

Is it Prince ??? oh no !! I'm sorry....what about building a little area for him in the yard you do have ?? I know I shouldn't say anything but you did say you're regretting this and I feel so bad for you - I couldn't do without my fenced in yard or mine would be on leashes all the time

So sorry to hear this. I cannot afford a real fence right now, and so we put up that orange meshi construction fence stuff. Its not the prettiest by any means, but we got 100 feet for like 30.00. It does the job. I know when I let my 3 babies out that they are safe and cant get out and run away. So why not give that a try before rehoming him!

Have you thought of pad training him? This way he will not have to go out to do his business, and when you want to take him out for fresh air and exercise, he will have on a harness and leash.
Another idea is if you have a place where you could put a clothes line in your yard, you can have a running lead. This will give him room to go potty and also get some fresh air, without escaping.
I am sure it is hard to give up a dog you have had for almost a year. I would be heart broken, but I would try some alternatives before giving him away.
I am certainly not trying to criticize you, but didn't you consider this, before you got the dog?

Im sorry you have to sell him...it must be terribly difficult..I hope you find a member here to buy him..

The snow/construction fence was a REALLY good suggestion (if you are taking suggestions lol) as it is VERY inexpensive and you could make him a nice little run with it..

unless in dire financial problems, I can understand. Otherwise, there is no need to sell a 1year dog away. we are talking about SELLING it away at USD$650. It costs a thousand over dollars over here. this is just not right. :confused:

Thank you for your suggestion, yes I did read up and consider this before I got him over a year ago. When he is let out he is always on a chain or a leash when I walk him, but it is when the door opens if he is close enough he will dart out before the person can get the door closed, and away he goes, not just a couple houses away but a block in a matter of 30 sec or out in the highway. Again thank you and I will check up on the fencing you are talking about.

They can be trained to sit and wait at the door, also keeping them baby gated away from the rooms where the doors are is helpful.

My guys know when I tell them no stay back that they are not allowed to rush through the door.

Also the area outside the door can be fenced even if it just setting an x pen around the door way.

I feel so bad for you and him both. Hopefully you can find a better solution than selling him.

If you are still determined to sell him, would you consider lowering the price. $650 for a 1 year old that is over the standard size is a little high in my opinion.

Please be careful with the orange snow fence...my Rosie chewed herself a little doorway and walked right out one day! The green garden or rabbit fence might be a better idea and it doesn't cost much either but it can't be chewed through.

As for the running out the door...you can train him not to do this...it's been addressed on YT several times before but it takes a little work. Do you have a porch where you can put up a baby gate so he can't go any further even if he does get out?

You sound like you love your baby...maybe you could explore a few other options before letting him go.

He sure is cute and I hope you don't have to sell him:( You got tons of good advice here, everyone here is so helpful:thumbup:

Starr used to rush the door as well, so we always picked her up when answering the door, and we kept it locked so no one could just open it, they had to knock. Maybe you could do that in the meantime, until you get the fence/training that you need?

Keep him leashed in the house, open the door a few times a day and step on that leash when he darts out. Tell him no and stay, give him a treat and praise. We did this with both our girls as pups and now they never step a foot out the door even if it is wide open. I don\'t think this is a problem that a little training won\'t cure. I\'d hate to see you sell him for this reason alone unless it were something else.
