Breed History Today's Yorkshire Terrier is very different from the early Yorkshire Terriers of the North of England. There are varying accounts of the origins of this breed and its development. I have tried to give the most accurate, and most widely agreed upon history of the Yorkshire Terrier assembled from books and publications written be reliable and experienced fanciers of the breed in the UK. Before 1750, most British people worked in agriculture. The onset of the Industrial Revolution brought great changes to family life. In Yorkshire, small communities grew up around coal mines, textile mills and factories. People were drawn to these areas to seek work from as far away as Scotland. They brought with them a breed known as the Clydesdale Terrier, or Paisley Terrier. These were primarily working dogs, much larger than today's Yorkies, and were used for catching rats and other small mammals. These terriers were inevitably crossed with other types of terrier, probably the English Black and Tan Toy Terrier, and the Skye Terrier; it is also thought that at some stage the Maltese Terrier was crossed with these breeds to help produce long coats. As the outline of the Maltese resembles that of many of today's Yorkies, this is very likely. Unfortunately, no records in the form of Pedigrees exist to confirm these crosses (possibly because of the poor level of literacy in these times), but a great deal is known about the type of people who bred them, and there can be no doubt that early breeders had a very clear idea of the type of dogs they were attempting to produce. We can see in today's Yorkies how strongly the terrier temperament has been retained. http://www.k9web.com/dog-faqs/breeds/yorkies.html |
I dont agree with mix breeds being bred on purpose but do agree that they shouldnt have to be free. Even if you adopt at a rescue there is a fee. The breeder has time and effort into it not to mention shots and vet care of the puppies and the mom. They should be confinsated for that |
Guys I have to apologize for my statement that one bad apple spoils the bunch. You guys are awesome. Thanks for the compliments on my babies. Willow, I've enjoyed reading your posts and seeing pics of you baby! edited to say: this bunch is not spoiled in the least |
First of all when 2 full breed dogs breed they are called a mix...not a "mutt". This is where the "designer dogs" come from. Although I do agree that they ask too much money for them (MO) that is up to who ever is buying the animal to make that decision. I agree....when I was growing up if the neighbors "beagle had an affair with the other neighbors "poodle" (interesting mix huh! lol) they would have been considered mutts...that is what we used to call them...now they are called mixed breeds...I don't hear the term "mutt" used much anymore...except for the older crowd. |
I had a Yorkie/Maltese Mix and it was every thing to me. I would have another if I could. |

I think your babies are beautiful! My favorite is the light one LOLOL they are dolls! |
Ahem... First, I agree that it is my business as to why I want a "morkie" and it's my money!! Second, if you must be nosey and know my reasoning for wanting a "mutt" : My yorkie has been terribly difficult to potty train. He's 6 months old and just starting to get the hang of it. I want a companion for him eventually and would really like a more pleasant potty training experience. Malteses are known to be easier to train than yorkies and they have a somewhat more calm deameanor. Why not get a purebred maltese you probably wonder? Well, their white hair is pretty difficult to keep clean and Howie and I spend A LOT of time running around outside in the grass and getting messy. He's certainly not a prissy dog! And to be perfectly honest, I saw one recently and thought it was freaking adorable - I shouldn't even need more of an explanation than this. I don't want one because it's a "designer dog" and I'm by no means looking to spend $1400 on one like I've seen. The point of this thread was to find out if there is anyone out there who knows of a reputable person who has "morkies". I trust my friends on Yorkie Talk and know that this is the best place for me to go to find my next baby. I appreciate everyone who stuck up for me!! You guys are the best! |
FYI: When I registered over 1 year ago, I knew I wanted to be a breeder so I stayed a lurker in Breeder Talk and learned and learned. Little did I know that these would be my first litter. I was scared to death to post at first about them. But I was still very excited. I give this litter the best care possible, from x rays to vaccinations and am gonna follow through like I've learned about. I haven't held back a dime and was prepared for a c-section if one was needed. And I definitely will not let them go before 10 weeks. If ya'll get on me it may be 12. Willow, we have beautiful babies and I'm so glad that I've had this litter as I'm sure you are. |
Im not into the whole mixing breeds thing but you just cant give a dog away for free. Do you know how many people search the free dog ads, pick them up and feed them as bait to train dogs to fight? I dont understand how someone charges 2000 dollars for a mixed breed. But I can see something being charged for a dog. There is "some" thought into spending money on a dog rather then spur of the moment freebie. Accidental litter or not careing people just want to recoup the money they put out raising these pups |
Sorry, Reputable breeders don't create mixed breeds.. so you're out of luck on that one. Why don't you try a rescue, I'm sure you can find a mix of that sort that may be older, and already housebroken. BTW, I'd LOVE a housetrained 6 month old Yorkie, that is fabulous, and he deserves kudos. I have an 8 year old cocker spaniel that isn't 100% housetrained, but that doesn't make me want a cockapoo. There is a post I believe on here that has morkies for sale...I have one and wouldn't take a million for him...& they are easier to housebreak....:) |
This is a hot topic all over Yorkie Talk today. I started one in the General Forum when I asked about breeding my Yorkie with my Sister's maltese. I go the same response about not breeding them. I apologize but I think they make great looking dogs. I have seen some Morkies or yorktese that make some PureBred Yorkies look like the Rats that they used to hunt. While I do love my purebred Yorkie and my sister loves her purebred Maltese. I would pay the same price I did for my purebred Yorkie as I would a Mutt morkie. Yorkies are great dogs. Maltese are great dogs. How can you go wrong mating them. The only wrong thing is when they sell them as designer dogs, but they should be no reason if a person is honest that they shouldn't get the price of a purebred of either breed. DMA I think they are perfect for pretty people. Pretty people want pretty dogs. LOL. |
Darla is a Borkie..I didnt pay HUGE money for her but I paid quite a bit...why you may ask? Because I met her parents..they had awesome personalities and that is what I look for when I pick out a pet. I wanted a small dog..she is the best dog I have EVER had. I couldnt put a price on her now as she is PRICELESS. So please dont refer to OUR babies as MUTTS as she has a breed name which is a BORKIE!! And the pups you were referring to are called YORKTESE!! My two cents.. Dawn |
