Puppy or Adult Female Yorkie Wanted Hi everyone. I am new to the boards. I currently do not own a Yorkie, but am looking to adopt one. I want a female. She can be a puppy or an adult, but preferably not over age 5. She would be a pet, not a breeder. MINOR health issues are not necessarily a problem. Both myself and my husband are former vet techs. We currently have a 4.5 yo male neutered Golden Retriever, an 11.5 yo male neutered Golden Retriever mix, and a 6.5 pound spayed female kitty. My husband really likes the Yorkies and finally talked me into one. We want a pretty small girl that we can take with us everywhere. Oh, and we are in northeast Florida. I am willing to drive 2-3 hours one way to get her. Thank you! :) |

Nope, still looking. But as I told Audrey, I am not looking to spend a lot "purchasing" a puppy. I want to adopt one from a rescue, or maybe get an older dog from a breeder. Although I would love to have her little pup! There is a Yorkie girl on Petfinder named Hope, in Marietta, GA. I emailed the rescue about her but have not heard a response and it has been several days. :( |

I really do not want to spend more than $300, which is why I was thinking I would have to adopt from a rescue. The little girl on Petfinder I was looking at needs some surgery ASAP, but I am still good friends with the vet I used to work for, so that would not be an issue. I know most puppies are around $1000, more or less, and that just isn't in the budget at the moment. |

Does it matter what size the yorkie will be? My parents and grandparents both got their yorkies for $300. But they weigh 12 lbs and 10 lbs. If you don't mind a larger yorkie, then you might be in luck! Just let me know! |
Alabama's a little far for me. I can go up to 3 hours one way, and I'm coming from Jacksonville. As for the size, we really want a smaller Yorkie, definitely under 10 pounds, but the smaller better. We want to be able to take her everywhere. It would be awesome if she were small enough to ride in a big handbag if necessary. :D |

These are just some suggestions. Yorkies are such a great breed. You will be in love with any one you get, whether it is 3 lbs or 15 lbs! But in all honesty, you will be more likely to find a bigger yorkie in your price range than a smaller one. |
Yes, I know, tiny size=big price. That's why I'm looking more at the rescues. I just haven't seen any on Petfinder in my area. I was hoping someone on here might know of some. |
hopefully you can find a rescue in your area |
I live in jacksonville florida and just had 6 yorkies this afternoon. :shocked7q wasnt what i expected...but they are all adorable. She had 2 females and 4 males. So if you are still looking then I'll be willing to work with you on your price range. So long as you get her the shots needed..and if you could help me find a vet for my other little ones. I just moved here from NJ. let me know what you think. good luck! :D |
Oh my gosh, I am so happy to hear this! I would love to see them. I would really love to have a little girl. Can you send me a private message about the parents and when the pups will be ready and such? |
If budget is an issue, I'd check the cost of typical vet charges for your area. If you are looking into a rescue they might need some follow up vet care and that could cost quite a bit. Same, if not more so, for a newborn puppy. It can run into the hundreds. Many breeder charge 1k+ (our next litter will run 2k each) but they include all shots, guaranteed and come with everything a new owner would need in their puppy pack. If there is a problem (which we have never had due to proper breeding) we will cover associated vet bills up to the cost of the puppy within the first year. Just something to keep in mind............. |
Quality is worth the initial cost I agree with Terrance. The quality you get is worth it. My Yorkies usually live 14-15 years. Pay a little extra so you can have a Yorkie to be proud of and one that wont end up costing you a fortune at the vet, too. I 've know many who bought less quality and were sorry for that. Those cheap pups come with undetected health problems. They may show up soon, or many months later. Several clients have contacted me after very sad experiences their first times. I was able to help them with healthy, happy, well adjusted Yorkies for their second experience. Often, Pet store puppies and lower quality pups come with a lot of problems. I know you guys have probably discussed CKC registry to death, but would you mind saying it again? A newbie looking for their first Yorkie needs to hear these things. Knowing the lengths that AKC goes to- to make sure their dogs are pure, DNA tested, and can trace their lineage, I just cant respect CKC registry that allowed two folks to say "Yeah, that LOOKS like a Yorkie to me" and then would register that dog as a CKC Yorkie. I've heard they have cleaned up their act some, but what about all the earlier dogs registered CKC? |
Thank you for your words of wisdom. I'm not exactly a newbie though (new to Yorkies but not to puppy buying). I was a vet tech for 6 years and have been studying dogs for about 15 years. I know the CKC is a worthless registry, and I have no intentions of purchasing a CKC registered pup, so if that is what these are, I will not be getting one. I also will not be buying a puppy without a health cert, partly because it is required by LAW in Florida. But I am also not going to drop a grand on a dog. I will do my research, talk to the breeder, and decide if the pup is worth purchasing. I would love to be able to get a Yorkie from a rescue, but often the rescues are too strict about what type of family they adopt to, and it is hard to find a dog in rescue I am interested in anyway. I learned a lesson several years ago when I bought a Golden Retriever from a supposed good breeder. The dogs were AKC and we thought everything was great, but the dog we got turned out to be a very poor representation of the breed as well as having an eating disorder. So I am going to be much more careful now about who I get a puppy from. |
Wishing you good luck in your hunt for a yorkie!!! :) |
Im sorry ,but you are asking alot for wanting to only pay 300.00 |
This Thread May Be Closed. I See It Is Not Possible To Find An Affordable Yorkie, So Yorkies Are Out Of The Picture For Me. Thank You For Your Time Everyone. |
   I am SO PLEASED to hear someone say this!! People don't realize that "cheap" yorkie could potentially cost them a fortune in vet bills, or worse, a broken heart if it is too sick to repair what is wrong..then of course you have to look at QUALITY. I see so many people on here disappointed in their dogs, they love them of course, every dog deserves love.. but they wish they looked more like a yorkie should. It is no fun to be out walking your dog, and someone asks you what your yorkie is mixed with. I actually asked someone that one day and isntatnly felt terrible, I asked if it was a yorkie spaniel mix of some sort, and the people looked horribly embarassed, and said well she's supposed to be a purebred yorkie. I had one of my yorkies with me at the time, which they were looking at kind of like, uh oh, and just replied, well she's very cute...and tried to walk off gracefully.. lol It was just SAD. Granted these people obviously loved their dog very much, but didn't get what they thought they were getting. Another example.. I have a girl I am going to retire in December, who is only 2 and in perfect health (documented!).. I am only asking for her what her vetting is going to cost (spay, dental, etc.) as a show of "intent" from the new owner. Unfortunately I have been contacted by people only interested in a CHEAP DOG. Well, she is my baby, not a CHEAP DOG..and whomever ends up with her won't be getting her because she is cheap! They will get her because she is a perfect match for them, and I feel she will be happy, and they will be good parents (who can afford her vet care and premium food on into her golden years and beyond!) Sooo.. in essence, I'm saying KUDOS to you! Now can you help the rest of the puppy buying population understand as you do? Quote:

1 Attachment(s) Welcome to yorkie talk and I hope you find what you are looking for. Ok..Well I'm going to put my 2 cents worth in. Registery are only as good as the honesty of the breeder and the quality of the dogs being bred. I think It's an unfair statement to say if the dog is not AKC it's worthless or not going to be healthy. Most hold AKC up like it's the holy grail. They are just as many shady AKC breeders ..as there are in other registries. DNA Testing ..Really  Now....just how often does someone have this ran??? I'd say not very often. Why would this test be run.. If someone buy a showdog and is not sure the dog came from the parents stated they may have it ran.. But ( not normally going to be done by a pet owner) Two males tie with the same dam.( testing not likely going to be done by someone who breeds for profit only). Someone could breed a different registered dog (say apri ) but they also have AKC dogs they can doctor the paper and register the pups with AKC..WHY?? because AKC dogs can net more money. Shady breeder can get by for years without being caught..and if they are they will go else where or have the kennel registered in a different name. AKC is backing commerial breeder, Brokers and puppymills (AKA Hunte Corp) same as the other registries. Why own an AKC dog?? You have to have an AKC dog if you want to show it in an AKC dog show. Other registries are doing dog shows too. AKC does not guarantee quality of a dog only that the parents are registered with them. If I had to choose from two different dogs. 1. AKC ill bred dog or 2. A nicely breed ACA/etc registered dog. I would choose the ACA/etc dog. I also don't believe you have to pay a small fortune for a good healthy dog. I bought a so called high priced AKC dog and turned out to be a sick dog. You just have to choose your breeder well and do your homework before buying a dog. Sorry for the rant but this is just my opinion...;) BY the way I own both AKC and ACA. Can you tell in the picture which is which??? |
