I want a teacup yorkie in cali
 

HI guys I am new to the forum. I am interested in a teacup yorkie but I dont Have any idea where to start looking can you guys help me out i would appreciate it THANKS!!!!!!!! :) :) :D :p

Hi and welcome - you may want to start your search by researching the word 'teacup' - Technically - there are no 'teacup' yorkies. If you're looking for a very small yorkie - the sites that use that word may just be upping the price because they think it will get people to spend more. In many cases you end up with a standard size yorkie. Also - many times ...a very tiny yorkie will need special care. Yorkies as a breed are very small dogs ...even a standard size.....

Do your research on the standard for a Yorkie....You will read there is NO SUCH THING as a TEACUP! This is just a term used by breeders to get more money

I would look in your local newspaper and look at www.breeders.net. Make a list of breeders that you want to contact and start out by visiting several. You want a breeder who has puppies that are well socialized and preferrably raised in the house and not in a kennel. Make sure the living conditions in which the puppy has been raised are clean and sanitary. You also want to see BOTH parents. Don't trust a breeder who will not let you see BOTH parents AND the living conditions of the puppy. You will get your best estimate on how big a yorkie will be based on the parents. Don't trust a breeder who uses the word "teacup."

wanting a small yorkie is fine but why would you want one so little that you can garunteee that they are going to have health problems and also possibly not live as long as others? I think that the "teacups" or mini puppy are more of an accessory than a pet. be careful.

Yorkies are not really meant to be really tiny. Many times those that are, have health problems that can be very costly and there is no guarantee that the pup will have any sort of life longevity or quality of life. On occasion, one can be small and be healthy but that would be hard to find and be sure the one you get is okay.

A Yorkie that is about 5 lbs to about 7 lbs full size is still a very small dog and much more likely to be healthy.

becareful getting a tiny yorkie, to many accidents can happen to the poor baby, it is more wise to get a standard yorkie. I have a tiny baby and I'm contantly looking out for her, one wrong step and she could be seriously hurt! Sure the tiny ones are just so darn cute and many people will give you lots of attention, but is it really worth it? Do your RESEARCH pleaseeeeeeeeee!!!!!

Thanks for all the information I thought there was a teacup breed. I know the standard yorkie is pretty big it really dont matter to me I live in a apartment and i thought it would be better to have a smaller dog the forum is really helpful thanks again for all the information :D :aimeeyork :aimeeyork

There are smaller yorkies just look for a breeder that is breeding inthe standard or a little smaller. I have a 6 lb yorkie and she is small and would be perfect for apartment living.

Hi Just as there is really no teacup Yorkie there also is not a size differentiation such as teacup, toy or standard sized Yorkies. A Yorkie is considered to be a toy breed. The breed standard for a Yorkie is that it is to be under 7 lbs.
As with any purebred dog, they can vary within the breed standard for size and can be undersized or oversized. Oversized would be those more than 7 lbs. Usually these are sold for pet and not used for breeding. Although it doesn't say in the breed standard, most reputable show breeders consider under 4 lbs to be undersized and would not be used for breeding purposes especially for a female but a male under 4 lbs won't be used for breeding either.

I live in an apartment in Cali too. Brandy is 6.2lbs, and that still considered a VERY small dog! Often lots of times with the tinies you start to see lots of health problems come up. The tiniest yorkies tend not to live as long and you have to be VERY careful with medicine dosage, and even routine things like being fixed or going under for dental surgeries. (The tiniest dog in the world was a yorkie who was 30oz died from a vaccination.) They are more prone to hypoglycemia and freak accidents such as jumping off of a couch or people/objects falling on them and their little bones being broken or death. In short, they are very sensitive and there is less room for error. So if you suspect a problem you have to get them taken care of ASAP because tomorrow might be too late.


Imagine having a little 2lb baby that is able to run around the house. Unless someone knows yorkies very well and the signs of hypoglycemia and how to do the yorkie shuffle I wouldn't recommend a tiny. You should look for a breeder who's female is MORE than 5lbs with a smaller male. Just remember that size isn't the most important factor in finding your yorkie. Health, temperament, and a quality caring breeder should be more important. Good luck! Where are you located? Is there anything specific you are looking for in a puppy besides size?
