realistically, for that price, you're looking for an adult rescue dog, and that's if you're lucky to find one. and with a rescue dog, you'll need to have some money in reserve as many of them may have extra health and behavioral needs. good luck in your search. |
I am in the same boat. I live in El Paso and have been looking for a while. If all you want to spend is $300, you may want to consider getting a Yorkie mix... like a Maltese/Yorkie or a Yorkie/Poodle. They tend to be closer to your price range. There are several breeders in Texas, so if you drive to pick up your puppy that will save you even more money. I have been checking local shelters as well. The cheapest Yorkies/Mixes that I have found in Texas are about $350-650, depending on male and female. But I am starting to learn that you get what you pay for. They aren't as pretty as the more expensive Yorkies. Just be careful because there are a lot of scams going on right now for Yorkies in that price range. I would insist on picking up your baby in person so that you can see the conditions in which the breeder keeps their Yorkies and you can see the parents! Good luck to you in your search! Teresa |
Take a look in the local papers classified section. You'll find many different priced Yorkies there. I bought my boy Ranger 2 years ago out of the Star Telegram for $300 (after negotiations). But I advise you to call first and ask many questions before you visit a few places and walk away with a puppy. And be sure you get some kind of health guarantee, some of these people breed many dogs but others are honest people who's dogs just had a litter. I got lucky with Ranger, but I learned the hard way and will now take extra precautions when looking for a new puppy. Good Luck!! |
Thanks, Ranger.:) But I have been exhausting those resources already. Most of the Yorkies in my price range, less than $400, are either not in driving distance or not legitimate. I KNOW what questions to ask, since I have been searching for so long. I am not going to buy a puppy from a mill just because it's in my price range. I want a healthy baby who is going to be with me for many years to come. It is just so sad how people will try to make a buck these days. You were right about getting lucky with Ranger. (By the way, I have a Rat Terrier named :animal36 Ranger!) I am hoping to come across one of those honest people with an unexpected litter. I have feelers out on a few websites and newspapers. I am confident that I will get my little furbaby:aimeeyork sooner rather than later! |
