Tiny yorkie wanted Hi, My husband and I have been looking for a yorkie puppy for a while now. I have always wanted one! They are the cutest dogs! We live in Central PA and they are so expensive around here (we would like to spend less than $500). We would love a yorkie no larger than 5lbs. when grown. I would love a little girl to put bows in her hair, but I would love a little boy too :) We are willing to travel anywhere in PA or OH. Thank you! |
Its VERY hard to find one for less than 500, espeically one that will be so small. But you might want to try some rescues. :) Like PetFinder.com :) Good luck! |
You will have to increase your budget a bit to get a healthy well-bred pup. Prices from reputable breeders in PA are usually over 1,000. www.petfinder.com is a good rescue link where you can spend quite a bit less for a dog that needs a good home. Best of luck in your search and welcome to YT! |
   Suz |
Hi and welcome. Usually breeders who purposely breed tinies are doing a terrible injustice to the poor puppy. The smaller the yorkie, the more health concerns there are. And they generally charge a pretty penny for those sad little tiny babies. Yorkies are generally around 5 pounds anyway and trust me, this is very small. Please just make sure get a well breed, healthy baby. And please make sure the breeder is reputable above all. |
Hi and Welcome to YT! Yorkies are a wonderful breed, no wonder you want one ;) I think in most places, 500 is on the low end to pay. Sylvan is right, you may want to think about spending more for a well-bred, healthy puppy. I understand about wanting a small pup. I wanted one and got one and he is 3.5# full grown. I can take him anywhere with me and he is adorable. Keep looking throughout this section of the board...many people advertise to sell pups here. Good luck with your search and I hope you find the pup of your dreams! |

Hi and welcome!! :) You have come to the right place to learn all about this wonderful breed. You are so smart to start your research before you get the puppy. ;) I have three yorkies that are smaller than average and they are so much fun and very healthy. Not all tiny yorkies come from breeders who breed tiny females. There is a 20% chance of tinies, or so I have heard, in every litter so many reputable breeders end up with these little ones. :p The thing you need to know is that they need a lot of attention. They need 24/7 care until they are at least 16 weeks old so if you cannot take them with you wherever you go then a bigger dog is a better match. All yorkies regardless of size are very social and love their owners so they are not good left alone for long periods of time. A lot of people who love this breed have more than one because then they have company if you have be gone during the day. As for price, if I were you it may be worth it to save up some money and pay the price for a good quality dog because if you can only pay $500 then you run the risk of getting a dog that may be sick or not have the best start in life. Yorkies are expensive to breed and the good breeders spend a lot on the mom and the litter before, during and after the pregnancy and they cannot afford to lose money by letting them go for less than they have invested in them. In the end, you will be glad you did this because vet bills add up quickly and if the pup is from a good reputable breeder it has a better chance of being healthy and free from genetic defects. Good luck. |
Hi I am also looking for a yorkie on the smaller side. I live in illinois and if i see something i can let you know. I have found though that that 500.00 is definitly on the low side. I have been finding you have to spend at least close to the thousand dollar mark. You will find the puppy of your dreams though. I waited a while before I found mine she is 4 lbs and i spent 750.00 she is awesome and healthy. |
Thank you everyone. I think we do need to spend a little more. I do not want my puppy to be sick. We also have a cat. Would they get along? |

Hi and welcome...you may want to check other posts here it seems like there was recently a male near Pittsburgh for like 550....or I agree with others in that range you might find a rescue that needs a good home....either way good luck in your search- and welcome to Yt. |
Hey, anything is possible, but usually yorkies cost more than $500. and usually the smaller the dog the more the money, its unfortunate but usually the way it is.. But there are always excepts to the rule! |
I am sure you are going to have to spend more than 500.00. But no matter what you find Please Please Please check out the breeder, ask for references and check them out. Call their vet, call the references.... And for a very small one you might want to think about it as they seem to need more attention and should be closely watched for about 6 months and sometimes even longer. Good Luck in your search. |
