Don't know about a dog bed, face wipes, tooth brush, tooth paste, etc. I have the Yorkie book and it tells me the things I need for my pup, but not the actual manufacturer for each product.

Make sure you get a crate (if you plan to crate train, which imo is the best way to potty train), then make sure it's a crate that the puppy has enough room to stand up in and turn around. I bought this one with two doors and there's an option to reduce the space when the puppy is smaller: Amazon.com : MidWest Life Stages Double-Door...Amazon.com : MidWest Life Stages Double-Door... Then, inside, you can use whatever you want - towels, old pillows, dog bed etc (just know that you'll need to wash this stuff if the puppy has an accident (pee/poo/diarrhea). I used towels at first, because Scottie had a sensitive stomach and had accidents when he was a puppy. Nasty times....:(

A smaller crate (the plastic one you listed) is good to, if you plan to travel with your pup. Or even for vet visits etc...

Buy ceramic or steel food/water dishes - they are better than plastic in terms of less bacteria buildup (though you obviously still need to clean them).

I don't use face wipes. You can use a wet warm towel or use tissue to wipe the eye goop. I wipe their eyes at least three times a day, every time they come back in from their peepoo walk.

Toothbrush - I bought the smallest baby toothbrush I could find at the local drug store. I found the ones at the pet store were all too big. When I go to the dentist, I ask them for a baby toothbrush instead of the adult toothbrush they usually give me because I use the sonicare toothbrush anyway :p

Toothpaste - there are probably better ones out there, but I bought the Nylabone dog toothpaste at PetSmart. After I'm done this tube, I'm gonna buy something with better ratings.

Petzlife spray/gel - I use this religiously. Brushing with dog toothpaste alone, their mouth still ends up stinking. This Petzlife stuff is amazing. Really keeps the buildup away! I use this every other day and brush with toothpaste in between.
Amazon.com : Petzlife Oral Care Spray (450+...Amazon.com : Petzlife Oral Care Spray (450+...

Brushes - get a flea comb in addition to a brush. The flea comb, with finer teeth, is really good for combing the hairs out on the muzzle (and of course to check for fleas).

Thanks loves tiny

Thanks very much I wrote down your puppy list of items. Could I ask about one ? What is Bitter Apple Spray for? I currently don't have a puppy but, hope to get one in the near future. I already have started buying things. I am planning on doing what my son does for his yorkie , dry food and in morning little scoop of wet food. I have been reading about how corn is hard to digest. I am thinking about Wellness dry food , would love to get suggestions from others what they use. I am on here to get more knowledge so I can give my puppy the best , that's the only thing I'm shooting for. Have the love thing down with my Grandpuppy , that's never-ending love. :aimeeyork Thanks very much for all your suggestions and knowledge. Best of health to all your little ones. :animal-pa

HI! The bitter apple spray is in case they start chewing on any item they shouldn't be, just a quick spritz of this will usually stop any further chewing :) I never had it with my first two pups-ugh and used w this little girl and literally, it stopped her from ever biting on anything she shouldn't-was awesome. Regarding food, if you are buying from a reputable breeder, they will be using a high quality food, so you should try to keep them on the food the breeder is using, whenever possible. If a switch is to be made, I suggest doing very slowly. I only use dry food. My 20 month old girl is on Royal Canin. hope this helps!

Thanks loves tiny

Oh ok thanks for the tip. My grand puppy never destroyed anything or chewed anything. She is such a good girl. She is also on Royal Canine . Thanks very much for all your advice. Now finding a breeder in my area. That's the difficult thing.

lovestiny 05-03-2016 05:18 AM

oh you misunderstood, my dogs have never" destroyed" anything either, but for example, when I first brought my yorkie home-she started to nibble on the strap of her carrier and also her seat belt in the car seat. I only used it for those items but it was just a quick fix. Chewing is very natural for young puppies, so this is just an easy solution :)

Hi everyone! So I'm getting my little puppy from Deb on the 27th, and I'm looking into pet insurance. I see that Healthy Paws is super highly rated, but it does not cover preventative care. Do you get another insurance to cover the preventative care or do you just stick with emergency care? Also, I was looking into AKC insurance, but there are lots of negative reviews about its insurance.

Another thing, how can you find the best vets in your area?

yorkiemini 05-18-2016 05:26 PM

Only a few insurances have a healthy/routine care plan.
Most are for serious illness/accident care.
I think others will come forth and give you their take on insurance.
We have Healthy Paws and fortunately have never had to use it.
I was drawn to the genetic illness protection and no limit protection.
Suggestion: although you are getting a well bred pup be sure to get you insurance while the pup is young and has no pre-existing conditioner.
Many don't get insurance ,but start a savings plan for their dog. I think that sounds good, but my previous Yorkie ended up with a $6000.00 illness that I had no insurance for. Came fast, but had to deal with it.

Like I said we have never used it, but my concerns are cataract surgery as she ages and/or cancer treatments that are expensive, then there are accidents and broken bones etc. I carry a high copay/deductible because the monthly payment is lower.

Others will come on and give you their take - oh yes many get the Care Credit Card instead of insurance.

bhanish 05-18-2016 05:29 PM

yorkiemini, so I take it you only did the emergency insurance? Because I was thinking of pairing my healthy paws insurance with AKC wellness insurance (I think you get 60 days of AKC for free).

That could be a good idea. At this point Cali's routine care has not been anything other than teeth cleaning with lab work included and some vaccines. Not very expensive. Be sure to see if teeth and labs would be included in the AKC plan as the health insurance considers it routine care.

Yeah, I'm concerned about the expenses of teeth cleaning, neutering, and vaccines. But I just did calculations if I got both insurance packages, and it would be around $60 a month. Not sure if it's worth it.

On a related note, do you recommend neutering your puppy? If so, when?

bhanish 05-18-2016 06:15 PM

Thoughts on Figo? https://figopetinsurance.com/pet-insurance

I support neutering on several levels. The first are health issues And the second deal with breeding issues. Good breeders spend many decades learning and studying breeding, genetic testing, and improving the breed. There is nothing haphazard to the process. Few folks have put that much effort and experience into the whole process and in general need to let the experienced deal with it. There are a plethora of things that can go wrong in the breeding and birthing process and it can be expensive and heart breaking.

As to when- check with your breeder and your vet as to when would be the best time. You have a very experienced bbreeder in Deb and I would suggest you use her expertise in those areas.

We have Trupanion on our two pups and they paid a claim in less than 3 days. The coverage is 90% and the deductible is arranged so that you can do it on a sliding scale and you pay one deductible per claim, so if you dog had to have on going medical you pay the deductible one time and the plan kicks in for the lifetime of the dog (provided you pay your premium) Be sure to take a hard look at them. They also have preventative care, but we did not accept that part of the package. Very Very please with trupanion.

Thanks for the info! I talked to Deb and she suggested I use the AKC for the first month or so because it's free with the registration. I think after that I might try Trupanion or Happy Paws.

I had another question. I'm preparing my apartment for my little baby, and I'm thinking of getting an x-pen where I'll place his crate, bed, food, and pee pads. I was looking at this x-pen in a LARGE but I'm not sure it's big enough. AmazonAmazon
The puppy is 2.5 pounds now, so it's not huge. But I want to give him enough space to walk around.

bhanish 05-19-2016 03:53 PM

Nevermind. I opted for another type of Iris gate.

So after two days of non-stop research, I finally ordered everything I need for my little pup. And now I wait!
