I just spoke to someone regarding getting a puppy, and she recommended that I get a 1 yr old puppy from a breeder. Do those even exist? I thought my options was a puppy from a breeder or a dog from a rescue. I opted for the former because I was concerned about health issues. So, is it possible to get a perfectly healthy, older dog from a breeder?

Scratch that last question. I just talked to Deb about it. Anddddddd I submitted my deposit! So excited. Now looking into bay area puppy training services.

Yes a one year old from a good breeder absolutely exist, and thank god you are getting one from Deb Sillars. IMO bad breeders don't have one year old puppies for sale. They get rid of (sell) them ASAP so they don't have to put in more money, or keep them until they can't breed anymore (about 6 years). So if a breeder has a healthy 1 year old, your odds are pretty good for a healthy one. The reason why they keep them is bc they are/were show prospects that didn't make their cut for one reason or another, but us laypeople cannot see the "fault" that the breeder thought that particular dog may not be a good shower.

Both Scottie and Casie were show prospects. I had no issues whatsoever waiting until my breeder had decided which pups they wanted to show and that I got their second choice - their second choice means it's a top-notch Yorkie for me!

To the OP: so glad you got such excellent advice from other seasoned Yorkie owners here on YT. Sounds like you're on the right track and I'm happy for you :)

There are still many people that still get slight allergies from purebred yorkies. One of my best friends is one of them. She has allergies to dander coat dogs, she thought she'd be fine with yorkies, but within one hour of her being in my house she got red eyes, runny nose. She took a zyrtec and was fine, but just keep in mind that all yorkies are not 100% allergy free to 100% of people. Are you willing to deal with the allergies for the life of the dog? Or are you going to abandon the dog after you find you are allergic? You should mention this to a potential breeder and see what they have to say. How they handle the question is a big tell tale sign if they are a good breeder or not.

The reason why I know I am not allergic to Yorkies is my son lived with me for 5 years with his Yorkie . She does not bother me , I don't get hives from her kissing me thank goodness . So, I would never get a puppy if I wasn't sure , I wouldn't take on that and have to give up the puppy. I love them too much to do that. So, yes I do know . That's why I joined YorkieTalk so I can get as much knowledge as I can before I get a fur baby. Also Yorkies have hair not fur another important point to bring up. People that are allergic know their limits and what they need to stay away from. As do I. If it is a mix I can't have it. I know my limits better than anyone. Right now in my area their are a group of Yorkie breeders who are making a real stand on the genetic testing issue,many have managed to eliminate several known genetic problems that have been pervasive in the area. The tests are easy tondo and not terribly expensive. Of course,mother cannot test for every little thing but have removed several issues in the breeding programs. People who,purchase their pups are enjoying getting the full genetic testing results on every puppy they sell.

Now the other side of the coin are the naysayers who are threatened by what this group is doing and feel they are being implicated in some of the existing genetic issues that the other group trying to improve.

I was amazed at the issues that came forth with the testing and those selling pups are being very up front with all puppy's they sell. Again, can't test for everything but every effort helpe improve the breed.

After attending some of the seminars I even tested my dog - $210 and was very pleased with the results that indicated how healthy my carefully bred little girl is doing

So I have become a real proponent of genetic testing. (For people too) as we keep learning about the implications of DNA.

Don't know about a dog bed, face wipes, tooth brush, tooth paste, etc. I have the Yorkie book and it tells me the things I need for my pup, but not the actual manufacturer for each product.

I love the UGODog system - it is a grate and tray system. You can put their pads which are washable in, use newspaper, nothing, or paper towels. Have 9 of their trays for two dogs. Can't say enough about them. They don't have to step on wet areas and it doesn't get in their hair and their feet stay clean. Don't like the grass stuff. - check out their website - their product got 5 stars from me. Now have several girlfriends using them.

Bhanish congrats on getting your puppy . I don't have mine yet but went to TJ Max and bought my bed and buy my grand puppies bed there also they have all kinds. The memory foam bed I bought for Grand puppy did not last as long as I had hoped I bought that at Walmart. Go to TJ Max , you may need to buy a small one then as they grow buy a bigger one . I have Grand puppy's old small bed when she was a puppy to use . Hope this helps . Take care :animal-pa
