Looking for my First Yorkie Hi everyone, I am looking for a male yorkie puppy that will be ready around the end of January-middle of Feb. Ideally it will come from a litter where the parents are both over 7 pounds. I have spent the last two weeks with my parents and they have a lab that plays with my staffordshire terrier mix all day. Since we have gotten home she has been incredibly depressed. I would get a bigger dog, but I live in an apartment and plan to for the next ten years, so a Yorkie seems to be the perfect dog. I am in Meadville, PA which is an hour and a half away from Pittsburgh, but willing to drive within a three hour radius. Thanks for your help :) |
Well you are in the minority. Most people want a tiny puppy. Please remember that the breed standards call for 4-7 pounds. Good luck in your search. |
Looking for Yorkie preferably female if at all possible. Would like in the age bracket of 6-9 weeks old and at very low cost--say in the rang of $200-300.00. |

It's very likely the Yorkie you choose will be in the 7+ pound range as an adult whether you choose a 'breed standard' pup or a rescue of unknown origins. Dogs, like people, have gotten bigger. But the breed standard remains very tiny. My Max was 4.5# at 15 months -- supposedly full grown. But over the last year, with lots of exercise, and excellent nutrition, he's a hefty 6#. He was beautiful, but very frail and very thin when I got him. Dogs raised to show may spend so much time in confinement that they don't develop the muscle and appetite that they do once they are placed in pet homes. |

You will not get a healthy, well-breed yorkie for a few hundred dollars. They are an expensive breed. They are very labor intensive to raise compared to none toy breeds. Most rescues have an adoption fee higher than what you are willing to spend. I would take my time. I looked for well over a year before I got Cozy. |

Perhaps a Silkie might be a more appropriate choice. They tend to be bigger than Yorkies, although look very similar and are less expensive. |
