Mary lives about 35 minutes away from me! The first time we talked it was just like being back in the show world, gotta love that woman. She knows and loves her doggies and the breed and she will do right by you and by the breed!

The odds of finding a "breeder" on the YTCA. are probably 100%. The odds of findind a "great" breeder on YTCA would be about the same in any collection of breeders.

There are good and bad breeders all over. The worst ones are most likely to be the biggest cons.

We have seen on here time after time where show breeders are not all as ethical as one would believe them to me. There are great ones, there are good ones there are so so ones and there are bad ones.

Many breeders hide behind organizations to make people believe they are better than they are. Most inexperienced buyers believe that if they are AKC they are exceptional dogs. Many even believe that if the breeder is licensed by the USDA that they are good breeders with fine facilities.

The fact is a show breeder who is a member of the YTCA could be operating a puppy mill under a different name at a different location.

People need to do their homework, and there are no shortcuts suxch as going to the YTCA. Every breeder should be scrutinized thuroughly.

Leading people to believe there is some magic list, is doing them a great disservice.

Good luck finding your pup! :) There are many wonderful breeders here and I am sure they will point you in the right direction.

I absolutely agree that every breeder should be checked out before you purchase your dog. It is a life time commitment. BUT, comparing the YTCA breeders to other lists is ridiculous. Yes, there are good and bad in every aspect of life, but YTCA does a good job in policing their members and takes complaints VERY seriously and at least, most that I have had dealing with believe and follow their code of ethics. No, you don't have to be a member to be a reputable breeder, there are many great breeder/exhibitors that aren't, but then again, they still work very hard to follow a code of ethics, breed responsibly, breed for the standard, and..for the betterment of the breed. How else would they produce their next show dog? YTCA is a great starting place along with regional breed clubs.

I hope I didn't open pandora's box asking that question. Just as a newbie and a nonbreeder/exhibitor, I just didn't understand (although I must admit there are posts on here that go over my head).

There is NO aimosity towards the YTCA. But to infer that because a breeder belongs to any one group, that automatically makes them a superior breeder is misleading.

There are some excellent breeders that belong to the YTCA, but there are also some bad breeders on that list. There are also excellent breeders that do not belong to the YTCA or to any group. They are small hobby breeders that just enjoy breeding.

Finding a good breeder is the key to finding a good dog.

:thumbup: I agree. I also look at the age and reputation of the club itself. The YTCA has been in existence for 60 odd years. It takes a lot of effort, time and dedicated members to keep a club viable and alive for this amount of time.
Go to their website see their involvement in bettering our breed.

It is certainly an excellent starting point to refer a potential buyer to.

Jeanie posted good information for the OP, that people should not be blinded and automatically feel safe, just because they choose a breeder from the YTCA's website. There is more to finding a reputable breeder, than picking a name from a list.

How is advising someone to research all breeders, including those from the YTCA, considered bashing. That is good sound advice. you don't peronally know every breeder on that list, so how can you recommed them?

There has only been one person on this thread doing any bashing at all.

As for my agenda, it is only to help someone find a good breeder by doing their research. I don't live anywhere near Texas, and I sell my puppies locally so I can personally meet the buyer, and so they can come to visit me and see my dogs. Cause that is the kind of person I am, nothing to hide.

YTCA or not
 
I just want to make mention of the fact that when we were searching for our next yorkie recently, we considered a breeder who is still listed on the YTCA breeder list. However, when we began to ask questions about her in order to get more detailed info and referrals about her, we had SIX other YTCA breeder/exhibitors strongly warn us to stay away from that person. No one would tell us why to stay away, only to stay away. Does that sound like the YTCA is policing anyone? Does it sound like the reputable folks want to really keep someone from making a purchase mistake or that they just maybe have a personal issue with this person? Who knows!! We did get a great dog from a wonderful breeder/exhibitor who does not belong to YTCA. More proof that you have to do your own homework and that just because someone belongs to a certain group or organization does not make them any better or worse than another.

I believe the last 4 posts should also be deleted! Nothing but a bunch of bashers against the YTCA because they do not breed to standard. What's good for one is good for all!

I'm not bashing the YTCA! If you would like to choose your dogs strictly by picking a name off the YTCA breeders list because you say it's the only place to find "reputable" breeders, than that's your business but I and others feel there's more to choosing a breeder than making a selection from a list of names - regardless what organization those breeders belong to.
