Wanted: Female Show Yorkie, Texas
 

Hello,

My name is Colleen Byrd and I live in the Huntsville area. I'm originally from the Bellville/Brenham area. I have two rescue yorkies, Bodie and Vada. They are my loves. I have been researching showing yorkies for some time now, and I believe that I would love to try this as a hobby. I can provide more information on my home, lifestyle, and pets upon request.

I am looking for a female puppy of SHOW POTENTIAL. I am willing to place a deposit and wait until she is of an appropriate age to be released as a show puppy. I want to be able to visit your home and see her parents. I want full registration rights through the AKC and vaccination records. This breeder must be in Texas, and be willing to answer questions throughout and after the buying process.

Have you tried contacting the breeders listed with the YTCA? Generally they will mentor as well. I know that a lot of the show breeders here suggest going to shows, getting to know some of the breeders that way and finding a mentor.

The Reliant Dog Show is coming up in July. That would give you the opportunity to meet a lot of breeders.

Be prepared to spend a lot of time (maybe years) building a relationship with a show breeder if you want them to give up a dog with show potential. Those dogs are few and far between so you will need to build an exceptional level of trust before they will consider it.

Thanks! I went to this show last year. I volunteer with Animal Friends Shelter of Bellville, and we have had a booth at the show for a couple of years now. Its tricky finding a good time to talk to them at shows. I plan on going this year, but I will have to set aside a time to sneak away from the booth for a while.

The best way to accomplish what you want is by attending shows, letting breeders get to know you, become a gopher.

But, obtaining a show dog from great lines takes a bit more work on your part......Start studying pedigrees, researching breeders/exhibitors, this person should be an experienced breeder, producer of champions......

Your first show dog will likely not be a female....You will have breeding capabilities, but with constraints....not until the dog is Championed and only to qualified bitches and all dogs not kept by you will be sold on spay/nueter contract (this part usually stays in place for two or three generations), meaning the off-spring and the off-spring of the off-spring...

Well I think it is good that you put your wishes strongly out here, on this public forum. How-ever very good reputable breeders will need/require a whole lot more commitment and knowing of you before they place their precious lines with you. This posting is somewhat misplaced.

Join your local breed club, preferably a Yorkie Club, if not that a Toy club if not that a local all breed club. Get to know the exhibitors, allow them to know you. go to shows, meet the breeders.

Before having a show male Yorkie placed with me, I knew my breeder/trainer for over three years. I showed and trained another breed. She knew me from the inside out, as I knew her. Trust can only be developed over time, and it is Earned. I fell in love with the Yorkie breed, through training with my BRT;s as they were there too, as they were in many show weekends we attended.

You must be prepared to show and champion your dog, at your cost (mainly). To prepare, and train your dog for the show ring. To provide the very best of care for this wonderful pup. This includes, nutrition, grooming, socialization and show training.

Be prepared to spend upwards of 20 hrs per week, on grooming, socialization, and training. Particularly in the beginning, when wrapping and such is awkward. You will need to find and purchase the "right" products for your show dog. You will need to purchase grooming tables, crates, different leads, wrapping papers, grooming shears;clippers,e tc. Your show dog will need to be bathed at least once a wk or more.

So I ask you are you ready for this commitment of time and money? There is quite simply no cheap way of doing this; nor should there be.

Good luck in your search. You have been given some excellent advice. There are several reputable show breeders in Texas but like others have said, you have to win their trust and show you are truly committed to showing before they would sell you a dog. Please, take your time, go to some dog shows and get to know some of the show breeders in your area.

Would you explain to the layperson, the purpose in showing? I'm assuming its to get an objective perspective of how close your dog is to standard. It seems to require a huge investment of time & money. Is it like a beauty pagent in that the winner's are awarded prizes in addition to the recognition of being well put together? With the hours required it seems like it would become your fulltime job.

I love that show. I attend it with the shelter I volunteer with. We spend the week there and sort of take turns watching the booth and sneaking off to see some of the events.

The purpose of Showing per the AKC is to obtain approval of your breeding stock..

And yes, it is a full time job....handling, presentation of a dog.. requires hours a day..

Winners are awarded points towards their championship.....ribbons in conjuction with their placement....Trophies if at a specialty.
