Any unspayed puppies in Modesto CA? It doesn't have to be show quality. I just want an AKC yorkie female unspayed for around $500. I'm well aware of the issues involved and I appreciate it if anyone knows a few breeders in Modesto. Thank you very much for the time. |
Why does she have to be unspayed?? Are you going to breed her? |
I am hoping to. |
I joined this site so I could talk to people and get their viewpoints on breeding healthy Yorkies. |

Unfortunately I don't even know where to find a mentor. Do I meet a mentor in person or is online mentoring acceptable? I have spent the past month studying on Yorkies on the internet to better understand my parents' Yorkie and help them out and I'm willing to do more studying. |

I would like to also add a little "food for thought"........you might receive PM's outside of your post with offers to sell you puppies to breed. Please think about the type of person that would be willing to sell you their puppy sight unseen for $500 or less. Then think about the quality puppy someone is willing to sell you to use for breeding. Probably not a very good representation of the breed to begin with so you will in turn be producing a poor representation of the breed as well. Is that how you want to begin your breeding experience? |
I wouldn't be sight unseen. I'm looking locally for a Yorkie and that is the idea of my post. I was asking if anyone knew any breeders in the Modesto region of California. I'm willing to meet the breeders and answer any questions they have. We have 1 Yorkie yes. A female who is the most energetic and happy puppy around. I'm looking for a sister for her, a pet for me, and a potential to breed healthy dogs. I'm not looking for a Teacup kind. I don't enjoy those. I simply want a Toy Yorkie female. |
I appreciate the concern and the opinions and I've been reading on the scams and thefts happening. Again I'm reading everything I can find. |

I agree with all the advice you have gotten so far. I also wanted to point out that no way are you going to find a breeding quality female for $500, especially in California. For that price you are looking at a puppy from a backyard breeder who is very far from the Yorkie standard and may carry genes for all sorts of health issues. Reputable breeders thoroughly test all dogs they breed and start with dogs who are close to the standard as possible. They have a considerable amount of money invested in their breeding program. You need to take your time and save up enough money to purchase a quality Yorkie. You also need to have thousands of dollars in the bank to cover possible emergencies like c-sections and vet bills for puppies who may have a health issue in the first year or so. Responsible breeders have health guarantees. Should you produce a puppy with a liver shunt (and Yorkies are 36 times more likely to be born with one than all other breeds combined), the surgery to repair it is several thousand dollars. While you are saving your money, you can learn as much as possible about the breed by going to shows and interacting with responsible breeders. |
The sounds wonderful. Alright then, I'll start looking for those very suggestions. Thank you for all the comments! |

You've been offerred some great suggestions. However, obtaining an unspayed, quality, breedable female for the price mentioned is close to impossible. Not saying that it isn't possible, but the operative word is quality. And of course obtaining the dog from a reputable breeder. No reputable breeder will turn over a breeding dog to just anyone. |
Some good advice given to you. Do you mind me asking how old you are? You don't have to answer if that makes you uncomfortable. I just get the feel you are young. |
Can you find a cheap dog to breed in and around Modesto? Yep, I have no doubt that you can. There are a lot of unethical breeders out there. But just because you can, doesn't mean you should. You said the dog doesn't need to be show quality. Well then why on earth would you want to breed one if it wasn't an excellent representation of the breed? There is a plethora of badly bred Yorkies on the market, why add to it? In addition to finding a mentor like was mentioned here, you should familiarize yourself with the California Puppy Lemon Law. If you sell or give away as few as 2 litters in a Calendar year, you can be held to this. It makes breeding a less than healthy dog a VERY expensive proposition. California Lemon Laws for Dogs |
