Yorkie for Disabled Child & Family

Dear YT Members,

I am posting this thread on behalf of a dear friend of mine. My friend, Chris, has a 9 year old beautiful boy who has spinal bifida. He has been married for many years to his wife, who stays at home to take care of their son. When I told Chris that I had finally gotten my beloved Yorkie, he almost got tears in his eyes. After talking with him for a while, I began to understand the meaning of his tears. Chris's wife and son had been wanting a dog for almost 2 years now. However, the little boy has his heart set on a Yorkie. Unfortunately, with thousands and thousands of dollars in medical bills coming in each year - this has left little room to spend a few thousand dollars on a puppy. Their son has struggled since he took his first breath, but is a true fighter. He has been in a wheelchair his whole life - but Chris and his wife have tried their best to give their son a normal life. He actually goes in for a 12 hour surgery today, and will be bed-ridden on his stomach for several weeks. He will then have another surgery in the next few months. We are praying for him and his family.

Chris and his wife have given thier lives to taken care of their growing boy. They cut their plans of more children short to focus on their son. My main point of this thread is to see if there is anyone out there who has or knows if there are places to get Yorkie puppies for disabled families at a lower cost. While they are more than capable of caring for the puppy (stay at home mom and the son is 9 and constantly watched, no agressive behavior) and paying for vet and food, etc - Chris is not able to fork out $2000 (going cost in the Northern Virginia area) for the puppy. He has looked at shelters for over a year now, regularly, to see if anything comes in. He has yet to find the precious puppy to bring home to his family.

Please, if there is anyone with information on this subject - please leave a post! Chris is a hard working man, working with me at Booz Allen Hamilton (consulting firm). With the holidays coming, it would be so amazing for him to be able to show his son that his dream has finally come true. He wants a Yorkie more than anything in the world - and I thought YT might now just how we could help him. Thank you for taking the time to read my post, and please pray for his son as he begins his road to recovery from surgery today.

Thank you again!!! :animal36

Does anyone have any suggestions or advice on this? Thanks!

Just a thought...do you think that an older Yorkie (1 year +) would be better for Chris's son? I have two 5 month old pups right now, and have a 2 year old Yorkie back home in CT, and let me tell you...when I had my wisdom teeth out, the 2 year old was just amazing. She had matured to the point where she didn't need to constantly play and play and play...I couldn't really hang out with the babies because I was in so much pain and they were so active. My 2 year old just laid by me and cuddled. This is just my experience, but Yorkie puppies are a LOT of work :) Maybe you could get an older Yorkie from a breeder who is phasing out one of their babies they used for breeding.

That is a great idea. I had not thought about this before. Yorkie pups are a lot of work and not that he wouldn't want the work, but maybe it would be easier for him to have a more obedient and older yorkie. Thanks so much for the advice, I will pass this information along and check into it more!

Ah...Booz Allen, I work for GIS, we do some business with you guys, I think. Maybe they could try a Yorkie rescue...lots of lonely dogs looking for a good home and adoption fees would probably be closer to their price range. Just a suggestion.

In Kansas City, we have an organization called "Dream Factory" and I've also heard of "Make a Wish Foundation"....they help make dreams and wished of disabled kids come true. I don't know if you have any type organizations like this in your area that could help....might be worth a try. I know the Dream Factory sends families to Disney world or what ever the child has been dreaming of.

Good Luck!

Here is a site that might help: http://www.yorkierescue.com/need.html. One of our great YT members referred some of us to this site!

yorkieangel 10-24-2005 02:42 PM

Hmmm well I don't have any Yorkies but I do have small dogs. I also have transport for a dog to Virginia if needed. If you think he might be Ok with a non Yorkie but a true little bundle of love please PM me.
My rescue has a couple pups right now and also already have done the first vet check.

LvLaila, have you heard anything about the child's surgery? Would love to hear an update! Will keep him and his family in our prayers.

Only help that I can offer

would be to contribute to a fund for a yorkie for this little boy, single mom, not lots of money, in fact I work two jobs in order to exist in SoCal, however, I would be willing to contribute some money to this family in order for their little boys dream to come true. As mommy to Bengie and Garett and all the love and joy they bring to me, I would love to help assist someone else in having that experience, especially a disabled child. Please let me know.

If they still want a puppy, I think eensor is still selling Tater Jack for $300...we could maybe figure out a way to get him down to where you are

I'm located in southern Ohio and would be more than willing to drive part way. We could do it.

Tater Jack would probably be perfect for him since he is going to be a bigger Yorkie. Do they have money for vet bills for him, though? I want him in a situation where he will be well looked after and taken care of. If so, I'd be willing to donate part of the $300 that Tater Jack costs to help this child get a Yorkie.

I just reread the original post and it looks like this family does have the means to take proper care of Tater Jack. I can take him to Indy if someone else can pick him up from there and transport him to another stop on the "Yorkie Railroad."

Hi, I have a beautiful male yorkie that I will sell for 400.00, He will be 3 December 27th.........He is a cuddle bug, very sweet and quite. I would love to keep him, but I am getting into showing and have too many pets. Email butterfly70814@yahoo.com for pictures if your interested..............I am in Baton Rouge, LA so we would need to figure out a way to get him there should Chris want him..........Its getting cold for shipping and Rowdy has been away from us only long enough to be at the groomers.

Update

Hi everyone! I am so so so excited about all of these positive responses you all have given. This is a truly remarkable little boy, and I can't thank you enough for all of your support and encouragement.

I just spoke with one of Chris's closest friends and she said he was doing well, but still in the hopital. He had some leakage from the major surgery to put metal rods in along his spine to try and straighten his back. We are not sure how much longer he will have to remain in the hospital, but are keeping our hopes high with a quick and easy recovery.

I have left messages for Chris regarding the Yorkie Pup's that you all have so generously offered at low costs. I hope to hear back from him soon!!!! I can't wait to see how excited he will be to see that we have worked together to bring him a beautiful Yorkie.

To everyone who has responded to my thread:
I will post any information regarding Chris's son and updates on the situation with the puppies. I will give him the numbers and emails of all the people who have so graciously put out offers. I will also PM you to give further details.

Thank you again to everyone who has been so kind! YT's are remarkable people, and our Yorkie's bring endless joy to all of our lives!

R,
Ashley

Update on Kellen 10/27/05

New Update. Chris is coming back to work today, hopefully! So Carolyn and I are so excited to discuss the details further with him regarding Tater Jack! Carolyn was able to get in touch with him yesterday, but was only able to speak with him briefly. He seemed really excited, but was a little out of it w/ all the pressures and issues surrounding his son, Kellen, and his surgery (as they were still at the hospital). The good news is that Chris coming back to work means that Kellen is doing well and is strong. We are not sure if he talked about Tater with his son, we left the suprising up to him! I will post again later as soon as I hear from Chris. I'm so excited to show him a pic of Tater Jack and let him know about all of the wonderful people (especially Andy and Elizabeth!!! ) who have so graciously offered their condolences, support and help with this matter. We are so excited for Kellen's big suprise!!!!!! Thanks again to everyone who has been a part of this. YT is truly filled with an amazing group of people. I'm so happy and lucky to be a part of this.

P.S. - For those of you who haven't seen Tater Jack, I have attached a pic. I'm pretty sure this is Tater. I got it from one of Elizabeth's postings of all her pups, and I think this one is Tater.

Sincerely,
Ashley :aimeeyork

Those puppy pictures are so cute.

Last week on one of the forums there were several links to Yorkie and crosses for placement as rescues. So many of the rescues are fostered in diferent states and there might be one near you.
I just gave away a little choc Yorkie 3 weeks ago. He is healing a broken heart of a family who lost their lhaso.
There will be a perfect match really soon. God answers our prayers!!

I have a handicapped child

hi
I have a daughter that is handicapped she is much like a 3 year old, but is
27 and one of our yorkies Harlea is her best friend. Harlea has been great with Leslie, Harlea seems to know whats going on with Leslie and runs to kiss her all the time
Leslies Dr filled out the paper work so Harlea is Leslies service dog and can go any where with Leslie,
Harlea helps to keep Leslie happy in stores and she seems to know if Leslie
is going to have one of her little fits. Harlea goes rrurrurrrruuuu, and we know what that means time to leave to store we have about 15 mins.............lol
I think yorkies for kids like Leslie is a great thing..
thanks Lynda

I'm so happy your daughter, Leslie has Harlea as her special Yorkie. I've read on many Yorkie forums about these super Yorkies that have the ability to sense when an individual is going to have an 'epoisode.' Harlea must be a ray of sunshine in your daughteer's life with all those Yorkie kisses.
Thanks for sharing.
Jessica
