Natural Tail (Not Docked) I'm interested in a Yorkie with a natural tail that was not docked. I understand that the AKC standard requires the tail be docked; but, I do not intend to show him. I've seen one breeder who allows a buyer to make arrangements before the litter is born (since docking is usually done on day 1-3). But, then there wouldn't be an opportunity to see the puppy's personality before adopting him. |
I was just going to say, you would have to contact the breeder ahead of time. If someone had that request I would not have an issue not docking the tail. I love their tails :) |
I have had a few buyers in the past that I tried to talk them into a long tail and they wanted it docked. I was kind of disappointed but I really think its only because it is what we are used to seeing. Same with a Doberman, Cocker spaniel.. it would look odd to have a big fluffy tail I guess.. If you really are set on the natural tail then I would contact a breeder to make arrangements beforehand. Unfortunately, your not going to know its personality but then again.. its a bit hard not to fall in love with them regardless of their dispositions... especially as a puppy. |

Just imagine if for any reasons that family didn't end up getting the puppy after all........puppies are adorable with tails and all but since the standard calls for docking that could be an issue to find the perfect home, and I would say the price would have to be adjust accordingly. I know that choosing a puppy that young will not give you the opportunity to see their personalities , size or looks but I would say this is impossible for a breeder to do as in order to give you the opportunity ,we would have to leave all of the puppies in full tails. On occasions I have seen yorkie puppies advertised with full tails explaining that due to personal emergencies puppies were not taken for docking but very rare to find. Good Luck :) |
I am not a breeder so I may be wrong about this but have you considered a Biewer or adopting from a German breeder? If I remember correctly it is illegal to dock tails in Germany. |

I agree in that most breeders probably would not have a problem not docking the tail for you, but it does mean picking the pup out early. Of course, there are some breeders out there that do not dock despite the standard. If you are able to find a breeder that you trust with this practice, it will give you a chance to see the puppy's personality to make sure they are a good fit for your family. I do not dock tails, regardless of the AKC standard. My vet considers it "unncessary and unhealthy" for pet quality puppies so we natural rear our yorkie pups with tails intact. There are other breeders like us out there, I hope you find one with a puppy that fits well with your family! |

I have a puppy that I didn't dock her tail. My husband wanted to keep her so I figured why put me and her through it? She is glorious! Her colors started breaking and she looked like she was going to be white. Her hair got to a length that I couldn't stand it anymore, I had to see what she looked like under those black tips. I cut the black tips off, she was soooo light that you could have called her white unless you put her next to a white dog. LOL That was a couple of months ago and now she is a very light silver/white with light brown moustache, beard and paws. Her tail is half that light silver/white fading to black toward the tip of her tail. The pictures are about a month old. Here is Patty. I was tickling her in the 2nd picture. Sylvia |
