2 questions about Bred-By-Exhibitor handling... I think I made a bad boo-boo at the last show. My daughter and myself handled my two male 6 mos old in the last show here. There were no other males in any class but winners (a male champion + 3 other champ dams). The pup my daughter handled won 1st in BBE and in winners he took BOB. Only problem, I am listed as the owner/ breeder and not her. I had no idea that immediate family members could not handle but I'm being told that I am the only one that could handle, which means if I want to show both in BBE, I'll need to wait until one is completely finished before I can show the other. 1. Is this true or am I being misled here? 2. If this is true, is there anyway to salvage that BOB? (it was a 4 point major). Maybe if I agree to not show him in BBE again? |
because of the error, AKC has the right to withdraw the win, you must be the breeder and the owner or co-owner of record.... This is what is published; The Bred-by-Exhibitor Class shall be for dogs that are: Six months of age or older as of the first day of the show; Not AKC Champions of record on the date of closing of entries for the show; Individually registered with The American Kennel Club as of the date of closing of entries for the show; Owned or co-owned by any of the breeders of record as the date of the closing of entries for the show. The person handling the dog in this class must be a breeder of record and an owner of record of this dog. |
I might add the winners dog points will go to the reserve dog, which I assume you were the one showing him...AKC wont make exceptions for registration errors, your daughter had to have been registered as the co-breeder and co-owner to handle the dog in the bred-by class. If you want your daughter to show have her show in the puppy classes while you show in the bred by. How sad for this to happen:( |
Congrats on the 4 pt. major. That's huge! I am sure that Kim is right, but I'm still learning all of this as well. I'm curious though, how will AKC find out? Will she have to report it? |
Unfortunately your daughter can't show in the bred by class if she's not the breeder/owner but, however, she can take the puppy back into the winners class and show. Kim is right AKC will give the points to the one that got reserve. But maybe no one will protest. I'm not sure how AKC will know but what do I know LOL. I know if I had someone take a dog in the bred by class there would be a protest and the points for sure would be taken away LOL. Just wait and see and you can go check in a couple of weeks on AKC reports and see if the dog was awarded the points. Maybe you can hope. Sorry for the bad news. I would however, show 6 month old puppies in the puppy classes. If you have 2 do what Kim said Donna Bird Brooklynn's Yorkshire Terriers |

Donna, Both you and Kim are right....However, AKC will find out about the error, it doesn't have to be reported, but wins are scruntinized by AKC. It'll take a few weeks, but the points will go to the Reserve Winner. Notification will be made by mail.....They'll request the ribbons back....etc. Mary |

Hi, thanks for all the replies. Someone complained the day after the show. I wish they had done it after Saturdays show instead of waiting, but I guess there was not as much at stake until the pup took BOB. On Sunday, the dog I was handling won the reserve, but my daughters only got one point for beating me. She didn't get 4 points until she beat the 4 champions in the winners. Would my reserve winners dog still get those 4 points? |

I would be so upset too.....especially being new to showing....and such a nice win....the good thing is the Reserve dog is the same person....Congratulations on your win. |
I know a few months back someone posted on another list that their dog was a champion and they hadn't even been to a show. They had been notified by mail that something or other had happened with the original winner...the reserve dog was being awarded the points. |

it's been years since I've shown a Bred By---am I wrong I thought the Breeder or a member of the family (in the house hold) could show the dog ! Has that changed or am I just mistaken. As I said it's been YEARS since I had a dog in that class !! I better order me a rules book from AKC before I make a Boo Boo !!! |

It's as it states: Bred By Exhibitor...Breeder/Owner/Exhibitor must all be one in the same. Always has been the rule. Chapter 3 DOG SHOW CLASSIFICATIONS Section 7 The Bred By Exhibitor Class shall be for dogs: Six months of age or older as of the first day of the show Not Champions of Records as of closing of entries for the show Individually registered with the American Kennel Club as of the date of closing of entries for the show Owned or co-owned by any the breeders of record as of the date of closing of entries for the show. The person handling the dog in this class must be the breeder of record and owner of record of this dog. In any subsequent classes for which a dog from the Bred By Exhibitor class becomes eligible, there are no restrictions as to may handle the dog......(In otherword if your dog wins from this class anyone else can take it in for WD/WB or BOB.) |
thanks for the information---I better get me a new AKC rule book !!!! |
I'm still learning the rule book lol......It was exciting when I did finish my Harvey from the bred by class!! Donna Bird Brooklynn's Yorkshire Terriers |

I know when I was back home and showing Lee's dogs for her, we usually went back and forth, she'd have a boy and I'd have a girl.....so it was easy for me....well then we both had girls, she said what the heck are we gonna do....easy I'll show in bred by....she said oh ya, I haven't been able to do that in years.....well not since she was no longer able to get up off her knees |

Akc AKC is on the ball...they record all wins and points for each dog/bitch...soooo even after you think the dog has won its title..DO NOT cut the dog down until AKC sends the certificate and you have it in hand... |

Naw you know better, you aren't losing your mind.....I was speaking of Tahlulah....when I brought her out, remember last year in Canton, when she took the win on her first weekend out, that's when I began my drop jaw look of surprise..........Yeah! darn, I didn't start her out from the puppy class. Should have but I didn't think she'd start out so good. |

Pat, That was one of my first lessons from Lee after I finished my first Champion...As I came out of the ring I said now I can cut this bitch down....Lee says best hold off until you get that official certificate in your hand. |
