For anyone who cares...
 
When you enter a dog in a show, you are paying for an opinion of your dog/breeding. If there is one dog in a class and the judge gives you second place, it is not something to brag about..it means the dog does not conform well enough to the standard to be placed first...it is not a GOOD thing!!!!!

Rarely, does a judge dismiss a dog unless it bites..the judge as a rule is polite and will give the dog a second place if no other dogs are in the class.

Pat,

Very educational information for those just beginning to show.

I know what it was like for me when I started....people had to tell me when to go into the ring and if I needed to go back in I had to be told too. The whole reserve thing threw me for a loop....took me awhile to catch on to that.....

I know even now I can be so intent on my dog and someone has to poke me back into reality.

I have seen dogs dismissed before and not for bitting or anything like that. They are just asked to leave. I am not sure why. I can make my quesses, but that is all they are. This happened last year at a show in South GA.

If you do get 2nd - that is just saying compared to the other dog that one is ranked better in the judges eye than the one that s/he gave 2nd place to. I have received second before and then had to go back in for Reserves since the one that won 1st in my class got Winners. I have received 2nd before with many other yorkies behind us. So I would have to say second place is not bad. And yes, you are paying for an opinion. Hopefully the judge that day will love your dog over others and give your dog the points. Some days are great and others not so good. It is all just a chance we take and hope for the best. And yes, it does get very confusing at times - when to go in again.

In the world of dog show that 1st Place Blue Ribbon is only the preclude to that purple ribbon that says Winners.....that's where that points are at and gets you closer to that Championship.

just curious i dont ever plan on breeding but when you show when do you choose to breed that dog ? when you get to the highest you can get??

In the world of AKC dog shows, it takes 15 points to obtain a Championship.
Of these points (2) shows should be Major Wins...the # of dogs needed on a given show is different from Region to Region: Major wins are (3, 4, or more points on one win...

Most show/exhibitors will not breed a female until she completes her championship....Reason...you will have to pull her out of the show circuit and the coat must be cut down prior to whelping....you don't want those little puppies to get strangled in mommies coat when they are nursing. Males can be used for stud prior to completing their Champion ship, if the are over the age of 7 months (this age because you can not register pups until your stud has reached this age)...I don't breed my males or females until championship is completed.

Since you were not aware of the other thread, here's a breakdown of it.

Thread was started by someone saying that one of their chocolate offsprings had won at a UKC dog show.

Found out, one yorkie (the chocolate) was shown. There were no other dogs that were being shown in that group. The chocolate yorkie was awarded a second place ribbon.

I just caught up with this thread...TopKnot..I agree, second is great if there is a first place ribbon given..I would not be happy at all if my dog was the only entry and the judge handed me a second place ribbon, which is what happens when the judge does not want the entry back to compete for winners...the judge could dismiss the entry, but some place as second...

I love these educational threads on understanding a dog show....I know what it was like for me.....not a clue, dumb look on my face, asking what was going on.

I know nothing about showing... less then nothing if that is possible. I'm just curious why wouldn't the dog be disqualified if it didn't not even meet the standard set forth for that breed?

Most judges are not totally heartless and do not want to discourage a novice ...it is less embarrassing to place second then to ask the newbie or kennel blind exhibitor to leave the ring...
