Keeper and My First Show Well we had our first show this past weekend:) The first day Keeper decided he would freeze in the ring and not go lol ! But he did get his blue ribbon. He was the only one in his puppy class 6-9 months.The second day went so much better before his group started a very nice lady (Gi Gi) came over and gave me some pointers on how to keep him moving in the ring and it worked :D Of course he was still the only one in his group but did great and got his first place ribbon and best so then we had to go in again :eek: He did pretty well acted up a little but all in all it was a great weekend lots of learning for both of us !! I loved it and can't wait for the next one! So anyone thinking of starting go for it and have fun ! |

You don't get a blue ribbon by default because you are the only one in the ring. The judge does not have to give you first or give you anything at all. I have seen judges withhold a first place. You were awarded a first because your dog deserved it. Congratulations. |

Shawn, So glad you guys had fun and got thru the biggest step of that first time stepping in the ring. That is such a scary thing the first time. So glad GiGi was able to give you advice, it wonderful when other exhibitors step up to the task of lending a hand. That is so important and can make all the difference to a newbie. I remember Vicki Meadows doing that for me. I will always remember her for lending that hand on Squeakers topknot as I was shaking so bad it just wasn't going to happen without help.. :) He is a very pretty boy and you are on your way now. Congrats on your baby's first show! They are always fun even if they won't walk, lol. The more you work with him and keep getting him out there, the better he'll do. I have found that with a puppy, that taking them for short walks every day (making it fun, not dragging it out, using treats and toys) has worked wonders for me. I go out every day. I don't put a gap in our routine. (unless it rains all day which seldom happens here for some reason) I use our little country street we live on for practice now days. There are people, a few kids and commotion...it's a good atmosphere and not a crowded area. I am fortunate to live at the cul de sac and that in itself is a good place to practice with a pup. Ok, editing isn't working right. It never gives me enough time after I proof read for errors in spelling because I type really fast. I wanted to say that if you do not have a place like I described, a park is a good alternative. It is good to get them used to travel. Take them places and expose them to new people, short trips are best. It makes a world of difference. When you take a young pup out and about from a young age, you'll have less car sickness in most cases. Mine in training are raring to go every day. |
