Protecting their coat For those of you who show.... I have a question. When I take Zoe out, I always bring her out in a harness. I ordered a silk harness but wasn't quick enough. I'm so upset :( She has a little bit of breakage on her back where it must rub when she pulls and I don't leave the harness on all the time, just when we're going outside. Anyways, I'm wondering what is the best thing to use to prevent this? I'm hoping the silk harness will not cause breakage but what about the silk dresses or is just a collar (which makes me nervous) the best thing? Probably just letting them out with nothing would be best but I know she can sneak under our fence out back if she want to so I just don't trust that. Any advice? |
I never let mine in the grass. If you look at a blade of grass up close you will see all the sharp edges - just like a knife. The grass can do a lot of damage to a coat, let alone the harness and colar. I do not let mine wear a collar or harness. The have a patio/porch they go out on for exercise and then they are inside most of the time. I have wood and ceremic tile flooring in the house, since the carpet can also damage their coats. I hope this helps. T. |
coat breakage Hello, I dont recommend any harness. If you intend to show her, only keep her on concete, flagstone, tile of linoleum. Tile is the best as it is smooth and glazed. Grass and dirt yards are the worst for hair as is carpet. I you practice lead training, just use your show lead and be in a confined area in case she slips her collar. I keep my show dogs coat in "oil" until it is long enough to wrap. By then, they are with a handler. After they become a champion or are done being shown, I cut them down or am not as diligent with the coat. Sometimes the wraps are a problem too as the dog will "play" with them and try to pull them out. Thats when silk pajamas are really useful!!LOL I use Pure Paws cream or Bio Groom Super Cream to put them in oil. I have to bath and oil at least once per week and more often as the coat gets longer. Vellus products work nice too. Did you get to the shows in Saratoga? Did you have mega fun??? If you are going this week-end, talk to some breeders or handlers about coat care. I know you will be able to fine some great products at the show. Lynn |
