Can somebody tell me when should be start to wind (roll) puppies hair. What things I should buy for grooming show yorki.
How do you train your show yorkies???
| You mean wrap a yorkies coat? If so, I always wait until their hair gets to the floor. You must be very careful when wrapping to do it correctly. If done wrong you can ruin a coat. Ask me - I know. I put wraps in my first show dogs coats back in the 70's (a Mayfair male) in at night and when I woke up - all the wraps were in the bottom of the floor and so was his hair. Also not all types of coats should be wrapped. I did much better and was so much more careful with the next show dogs - I got help. I would get a mentor that can see your pup's coat and show you how and when to do it.
Grooming - you need a small metal comb for around the nose and eyes, a pin brush (for coat), and a soft natural bristle brush (for topknots). Of course the right shampoo, conditioner and oil for his type of coat. And of course you have your equipment, grooming table, pole, blower, etc...
Train for show - there is a lot to this. The best way is to find a handling class and practice. It is so hard to explain all the things involved. Main thing is to get your puppy use to the lead (make sure you have the right type of lead), and then practice walking with him on your left side. Praise him a lot and make it fun for him. Some use treats/bait from the beginning. Not all are best with bait. Some are better with just praises. You have to see what works best. Besides training them for walking - you need to table train them, so they stand in correct posture and hold it untill they are checked over by a judge. Also make sure they feel comfortable having their mouth/bite checked. Always praise and talk in a higher tone.
I would get some books too. There are many out there now.
Good luck and remember to have fun!!! We make it a family event going to shows. Infact my daughter was the one that got the points last time we went to a show. She was so excited. We are making some great memories as we go and I think it makes us closer as a family.
