Are there people who will show your yorkies for you? Ok I'm interested in finding out more about showing. Are there people who show your dogs for you? I have a male who has 29 CH's in his pedigree and have been told hes got great show dog qualities and would love to find out how someone gets started doing this. Any info is greatly appreciated...thx in advance!!! |

Yes, there are professional handlers. The best way to find out if he's a show potential is to take him to a dog show. Have a handler and/or judge go over him and give you there assessment. |
Thx for the info..I will have to look into doing that!! |
How much do handlers charge -- ballpark? How long do they have to work with your dog before they show it? |

It depends on the handler, their prices vary. You are speaking of boarding fees, grooming fees, training fees, entry fees, handler fees, those fees will go up dependent on the type of win your dog does. Then there are handler's expenses. |

Thanks. |
potntial Post some picutres..face on, stacked etc... The number of champions in a pedigree means very little... |
Not all handlers are the same. There are some top notch ones that will tell you right up front if your dog is worthy or not and you really want someone who will be honest and not string you along just to get a paycheck from you. So you need to do your homework on handlers. The handler that you want is one who wants to show the best and get it finished and back home on the couch with you. I have seen some handlers take dogs out for one year and not have them finished, because they are trying to show dogs that should never be in the ring. Look for a handler that shows and finishes nice dogs and in good time. Juzme :aimeeyork |
It is best when you are starting out to get a bit of help from a handler. My first handlers and my all time favorite is Tim Reese and Randy Winters. Many many years ago they showed and finished my first Shih Tzu. I learned so much from them. I still to this day will use a handler from time to time depending on the dog and the show, but it is expensive and most of the time you do have to send your dog away. So go to the shows and watch as I did many years ago , to see how they treat the dogs in their care. Ask different handlers what they think about your dog and if it is show quality. Because all yorkies are cute and very beautiful in the eyes of their owners, but may not cut the mustard in the show ring. It is a hard ring to get into, a lot more dogs than there are points given. But when you get a great dog and you win there is no better feeling....... I just put two back to back majors on my new puppy dog and two Best of Breeds, it feels good!!!!! I wish you success. |
handler Like everything, there are good and bad handlers...I was sooo lucky, mine set had a limit..3 months. She always made the deadline. She only handled one dog and one bitch at a time. I have seen some keep dogs for 6 to 12 months and only have a few points...not fair to the dog or owner. |

Lucky you Pat. There is a wonderful handler here in this region, who only handles 3 dogs; A dog a bitch and Special. As a matter of fact she's taken several yorkies to the top 10. She does have 1 assistant. The dogs she does show are cared for in her family room. |
That would sure ease my mind..... Quote:

Oh ha ha ha ha.... Mary, only you caught that........Yes, I have every intension of showing her myself......and will give it my best shot.....but, I too want a champion and I am not sure I can get the majors.....but, I will sure as heck try......and then send her out for the big ones.... ................then on to my second one....LOL, I promise NOT to be as neurotic with the second Yorkie....:D |
handler One of mine needed majors...it was December, the Ohio shows were approaching. My handler went and got BOB's both days and the dog did not have to start again in Jan, so I think a reputable handler is worth every cent.....I know I would have spent alot more money doing it myself..infact he would still need majors 15 yrs later...LOL |
