Just a bit of unsolicited advice, every yorkie coat is different, requiring a slight variation in preparation for the ring. Some have a dense silk coat, some have a finer silk coat that you don't want to bog down.....so, don't go overboard with product, cause you will change as time goes on.

I know it's frustrating, but you have to be persistant. It is disheartening to get the 'you have to show to breed' or 'how do you know if you don't show' spill, but when you try to learn about it, everyone turns their back on you.

I know there are alot of show breeders here who view the world of showing with utmost importance. Hopefully one of them will step forward and give you some help or at least some hints.:)

Agh! Good to know. All I can compare yorkies coats with is my own pet quality guys..Reggie has a super thick cotton coat...and Kenzie has as like coat but it is so thin I can do nothing for it (believe me I have tried!!).

The one thing I can tell you is that you must attend shows, make your face and self available to help. Breeders need to get to know you and trust you before they'd even consider entrusting you with one of their line they have worked so hard to perfect. I know that this sounds a little harsh. We want to know that you're serious and that our lines will not be misused. The last thing we want is to see a good show dog, not finished, end up in rescue, or bred improperly.

The probelm here in NB is there is very rarely a yorkie in the shows. I regularly check the baord for dog shows in NB and see if any yorkies are registered, when they are I attend. But so far that has only been once this year, (I missed the show cause I was busy having my son, lol).

Eventually i want to breed, very true. I love my pet yorkies, Reggie and Kenzie are my first babies and still my "kids" but they are pet quality. My breeder was lovely but these two are brother and sister and do nothing for the breed. I want to bring to this part of the Maritimes properly bred yorkies, that meet the standard, something we are sorely lacking. There are quite a few yorkie breeders but they are not breeding for the better of the breed.

I want to have a yorkie that I can be satisfied with, the right temperment, the right body stucture, the right movement and coat...etc...maybe I am once agian asking for too much or the impossible, but it really gets down to ethics of breeding, for the better of the breed!!

Good for you, now you understand your in for the long haul......Most exhibitor/breeders breed for that perfect yorkie, and there is no such thing, so we keep breeding.

HAHA! Anyone who is afraid of competition is NOT confident in their dogs! Competition is a beautiful thing! IF your dog wins over GORGEOUS dogs, you know your dog is ALL THE BETTER...if you constantly beat crap..well what does that say?

As for waiting til your kids grow up, I laugh at that! I am in the ring NOW at 6.5 months pregnant! ha! I have an 11 year old and an 8 year old and they haven't slowed me down one bit, in fact they are excellent puppy socializers. Amazingly I still manage to handle my dogs, shows, and yet make every pee-wee football game, and any other function of my children's...it's called time management! I grew up a "show brat" so I think that comment is completely funny and very rude!

Yep! you're kids are great puppy socializers.....I heard it over the phone........way too funny.

Congrats on your pregnancy! I just had my second little boy JUly 29, 2006. I got spoiled by my first, Peter now 2, was an angel baby, very easy going and good.
Charlie is very sensitive and colicky...but very sweet!!
I think my yorkies benefit from growing up with kids and vice versa! Reggie and Kenzie now love to play with Peter, Peter has learned they will play fetch. Reggie has decided that he is no longer "my" dog he belongs to Peter, he follows Peter around, when Peter has his morning bottle Reggie joins him on the couch and the cuddle. When Peter goes to bed for his nap and nighttime Reggie follows him to his doorway and stay outside the gate till Peter is asleep. I always know when Peter has finally fallen asleep. (We have a gate at Peter's doorway in case Peter gets up, I do not want him to be alone with one of the yorkies on supervised and i worry that he could sleep walk, our stairs are somewhat steep).
Reggie is now credited for saving Peter too, I had gone to the bathroom upstairs and Peter decided to go on an adventure, out the door he went, Reggie was on his his barking his head off. I heard Reggie's barks and knew that something was not right, when I got to the barking Peter was halfway up the driveway but crying because Reggie was uncharacteristically jumping at him and barking fiercely. The moment Reggie saw me running for them he stopped, wagged his little tail and walked jauntingly into the house.
It only took a minute for Peter to get out (normally the doors are locked but I had forgotten obviously that day) but I feel reassured and thankful for my little buddy. (Sorry for getting off topic)

I guess I feel that every case is different. We know that the children can accidently hurt the yorkies and as much as I love my dogs they are still dogs. I never leave them alone with the kids, we have gates throughout our house (almost every doorway has one), the yorkies have free access to every room whereas my son is limited (lol).

It is about time management, already at 5 1/2 weeks since Charlie was born we are getting back into our routine.

This other breeder who shows has very timid dogs, they were practically dragged around the ring, shaking and whimpering. It was close to disgusting. I know I am a newbie was but I was irratated that this was how his dogs behaved and the judge ignored that behaviour.

It does make sense to start with a male, I was just going before with the advice from Laurie from NikNak. She had advised to start with a female.

For those wondering Trinket is SO SOCIALIZED...she's spoiled! She will let out blood curdling umm...screams..LOL when my daughter isn't holding her. It's quite charming.. (LOL!!! NOT!) MJ was suggesting I squirt her with a spray bottle, so I did, and called her so she could hear her STILL screaming, but soaking wet.. LOL! Tenacious Terrier! LOL Gotta love her though.

My two yorkies decide to show their terror side when someone comes ot the door (the worst is when I go to the dryer, I have to open the door that elads to the outside doors...grrr), so we tried the water, nope! Tried a pop bottle with pennies and shook it at them...I think they laughed at us! So we tried Caesar Millans method, HA!! They keep barking just run upstairs and keep barking!

I really don't mind too bad, you cannot hear people enter the house, the door are old and do not make a sound, so the dogs let me know!

An opera singing yorkie?? You may be able to market that...I do not know how many will show up for her performance though! lol

I do have a question, did you find that most breeders have problem with the fact that you have children and a future small child?? I notice on most websites they have section where they explain why they do not allow their puppies with families of small kids. I am almost hesitant to ask anyways.
Or for you is it not an issue that you worry about?

Becki comes from a family of dog lovers/breeders/exhibitors. Her children have been raised in this environment, know how to handle the dogs. I'm sure this will be the case with the new baby.

I'm all sure that you know the implications of having young children and yorkies. The wee little human kids think they are cute little stuffed animals and don't mean any harm.....accidents can happen in a blink of an eye.

Honestly? I don't care. I am ME..take me or leave me! LOL won't hurt my feelings either way. If people can't realize I'm smart enough to protect my dogs from my kids, and vice versa, then I don't need them in my life anyways. :)
