Tips for new exhibitors 1. Train your dog to walk on grass. 2. Dont' leave the show until you get your pictures taken. The do them at the end of the show. I left drove an hour out and came back when Theresa told me about the pictures. 3. Don't wait to register the day of the show. Register online otherwise you may not be able to enter day of the show. I missed the first show because of that. 4. Don't be discouraged if you don't win all of the shows. You dog is a winner no matter what, he/she needs to put on a show for the judge at that moment..practice practice at home. Go to handling classes. Find them here: http://www.akc.org/events/obedience/training_clubs/ 5.Practice your topknot..I love this presesntation http://www.purepaws.net/Top_Knots_files/frame.htm 6. Make sure your show dog eats. I gave Dice McD's hamburger patty all weekend he LOVED it..lol 7. Becareful around large dogs. A Mastiff went after a Crested at the IABCA and in my handling class a Mastiff went after another Yorkie. Long Live the Wannabes!!! |

Love your name by the way..welcome to YT! |
Great thread but I was advised NOT to feed your dog the morning of a show you really dont want him to have an accident in the ring. Not a pretty sight! :) |

also Irene I would suggest not feeding McDs' patty its fried food (your going to get a runny mess all over that freshly groomed show coat when you least expect it) go to a local deli for fresh turkey for a treat on the road. |
Great thread, Irene! I find it very interesting to read about showing! Thanks for sharing this!!! |

Oh and scratch the McDs Turkey Breast instead. I was lucky that Dice didn't have an explosion  , I am all about prevention. :D |
Prevention always, anything can go wrong when you least expect it. Also always best if you groom in your hotel and your dog/bitch gets car sick pack an extra bag with baby wipes, shampoo, hair dryer and iron to do a quick touch up or rinse. Bring a treat but dont give it to him/her until your finished for the day. BTW you cannot register in an AKC the day of the show I believe only the IABCA allows this. There is about a 3 week prior cut off date entering into AKC shows. Also with the IABCA if your dog/bitch falls into the adult class. Dont register for all 4 shows. You can finish your little one with championship in three shows, if he/she doesnt finish then you have the option of picking up that last show. Why pay for it if you dont need it. |

There is a lady in my area who shows papillions. Is doing quite well with them I might add and has worked with me and my daughter on occassion with our handling. Anyway, she gives her pap's little pieces of "slim jim" beef sticks (the greasy long sticks) when showing. (keeps them in her mouth like a beaver, LOL) What do you all use for bait? |
