how do people become handlers for dog shows?
 
HOw does someone become one of these "handlers" at dog shows?

By what I have personally seen is that most handlers are also show/breeders themselves.. I have also noticed that some handlers grew up in a family of showing dogs and than it became routine for them.. I have not met a handler that did not own dogs of their own that they also show!

We have a wonderful conformation class at our 4-H fairgrounds and last fall we opened it up to the 4-H kids that would like to show their dogs.. But I can remember a couple of the older kids saying they want their career to be showing dogs "Handler"..

They've been showing dogs of their own for many years and have a knack for presenting dogs well and the next thing they know, others start asking them to show their dogs. The next thing you know they are getting a bigger clientell.

Sometimes they'll be a youngster wanting to learn and one of the professional handlers will take them on for the summers to teach them the ropes. There is more then just handling the dog at a show, there is the care in between, the training and the responsibility of losing no coat, etc.

I started as a junior handler with a Collie . Later , I met a Yorkie breeder that was ready to give me the chance to work with her during the weekends . Later, this breeder gave me the opportunity to own 2 of her puppies .

Yes some of the handlers will take on candidates they see potential in. But they also make sure you learn all the flunky hard work. LOL Bet you did your fair share. But I think it's great kids have the opportunity. Usually if someone has an interest they can let a show person know and they'll let others know.
